From schoolgirls to starlets: Naya Riviera leads the Glee glamour as the girls look all grown-up on the Emmys red carpet

By GEORGINA LITTLEJOHN

Sexy cheerleader: Naya Riviera, who plays Glee Cheerio Santana Lopez, looked all grown-up in a sexy black dress at last night's Emmy Awards

She plays a high school cheerleader who uses her sexuality to get what she wants - and is very rarely left disappointed.

And Naya Riviera certainly didn't leave the cameras disappointed last night as she proved she can do sexy off-screen just as easily as she can on it.

The Glee star looked absolutely sensational in a very sexy and slinky black dress, with a split up the right leg, that showed off her slender frame.

Naya, 24, teamed the black dress with sexy and smouldering make-up that made her look very sultry - and very sophisticated.

And she took to her Twitter page before the awards to write: 'Currently getting my face beat something fierce for the Emmys! Leaving soon!'

Purple princess: Heather Morris, who plays cheerleader Brittany S. Pierce, looked stunning in her plunging ruffled gown

It's all about her: Director Martin Scorsese was left in Heather's wake on the red carpet - but encouraged the cameras to flash away as he held out his arm towards her

She led her female co-stars into the Emmy Awards who all looked equally as gorgeous and all grown-up, a far cry from their high school alter egos.

Naya's on and off-screen best friend Heather Morris, 24, who plays ditsy cheerleader Brittany S. Pierce, oozed old Hollywood as she arrived in a plunging purple gown that was made up of layers of soft, sweeping ruffles.

Bringing sexy back: Lea Michele set pulses racing in her clingy red dress

She walked on to the red carpet just before acclaimed director Martin Scorcese and not only towered over him, but grabbed the cameras' attention away from him too.

Not that seemed to mind and was snapped holding out his arm directing the flashbulbs at Heather, who laughed at his antics.

Electrifying: Dianna Agron oozed glamour in her electric blue gown

Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry also became the talk of the red carpet in her very sexy backless Marchesa dress.

Dianna Agron, 25, who plays head cheerleader Quinn Fabray looked very sophisticated as she rolled up at the bash in an electric blue satin dress.

Filled with Glee: Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones in the hit show, beams for the cameras as she and her co-star Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays Tina Cohen-Chang, posed together

She wrote on her Twitter page as she was on her way to the ceremony that she felt like 'a little girl in big kids clothes'.

She added: 'Nervous jitters like I'm going back to Prom. Don't know why. I feel like a big girl when I put on high heels. I blame Carrie Bradshaw.'

Girly: Despite being older than her castmates, Jayma Mays looked very young in her fluffy pink dress

Amber Riley, 25, who plays Mercedes Jones, and Jenna Ushkowitz, also 25, who plays Tina Cohen-Chang, arrived together and made a very pretty pair as they posed for the cameras together.

And Amber joked on her email that she wished the night could have been more casual and said: 'I wish you could wear jeans and graphic Tee and chucks to the Emmys! Don't worry, I would never... or would I *evil grin*

The jocks: Mark Salling, who plays Noah Puckerman and Cory Montieth, who plays quarterback Finn Hudson

Here come the boys: Darren Criss, who plays Blaine Anderson and Chris Colfer who plays his on-screen boyfriend Kurt Hummel

'Lol I am definitely am a girly-girl! I love putting on dresses and gettin dolled up.'

As for the boys, there's only so much you can do with a tuxedo but they still managed to send hearts a flutter looking sexy and mature in their dinner jackets.

New Directions: Kevin McHale, who plays Artie Abrams and Harry Shum Jnr, who plays dancer Mike Chang

But unfortunately, co-star Jayma Mays, who plays the school counsellor Emma Pillsbury, let the Mackinley High School side down in her pink fluffy dress that made the 32-year-old look really girly.

The cast and the show left empty-handed last night despite being nominated in a couple of categories, but they enjoyed the night as they cheered on cast mate Jane Lynch, who plays cheerleading coach Jane Lynch.

Emmy Awards 2011: Melissa McCarthy is the big winner as she sees off tough competition to win Best Comedy Actress

By AMELIA PROUD

Crowning glory: Actress Melissa McCarthy looked stunned and delighted as she was named outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Mike and Molly at last night's Emmy Awards

She faced some stiff competition from her fellow nominess which included critically acclaimed actress Tina Fey and Academy Award nominee Laura Linley.

But it turned out to be Melissa McCarthy's big night as she trumped them all to be crowned Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series at the Emmys last night.

The 41-year-old actress looked stunned as she was awarded the gong for her role in sitcom Mike and Molly.

Standing alongside her fellow nominees which also included Martha Plimpton, Amy Poehler and Edie Falso, she gasped as her name was read out.
The rest of the ladies embraced her as she struggled to take it in, before she was handed the golden award.

And the winner is: Melissa lines up with her fellow nominees (L-R Tina Fey, Martha Plimpton, Amy Poehler, Edie Falco and Laura Linney) as they wait for the result

Congratulations! The ladies gather round an emotional Melissa as she is announced as the winner

As host Rob Lowe placed a tiara on her head, the ladies gathered round her as they handed her a bunch of red roses.
Still in shock, she told the audience: 'Holy smokes. Wow, it's my first and best pageant ever. I'm from Plainfield, Illinois, and I'm standing here and it's kind of amazing.'

This is your moment: As the ladies applauded Melissa, host Rob Lowe places a tiara on her head and Sofia Vergara, in red, hands her the award

The series follows two people, Mike Biggs, played by Billy Gardell, who is a police officer who wants to lose some weight.

He meets Melissa's character Molly Flynn, a teacher who likes her larger figure and they become an unlikely couple.

It was also Kate Winslet's night at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last night as she reigned supreme at the awards ceremony.

Winslet picked up the lead actress in a miniseries or movie Emmy, for her starring role in the HBO drama Mildred Pierce.

The 35-year-old played the titular role in the five-part series, which was set during the Great Depression.

Emotional: Kate Winslet paid homage to her mum, after winning an Emmy Award tonight in Los Angeles

Joy: Kate punched the air in delight as her name was announced

Dressed in a stunning red gown, Kate gushed after winning: 'Mildred Pierce was capable of great acts of love as a mother.

'It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do with your life, you will never stop needing your mum. And I will never stop needing mine, so thanks mum.'
Based on a 1941 novel by American writer James M. Cain, the movie centres on a young mother with a talent for baking, who is forced to hunt for work to support herself and her two young daughters, after throwing her husband out of the house.

Emmys worst dressed: Creased and shiny Vs shapeless... Olivia Munn and Katie Holmes fight it out for the fashion faux pas award

Olivia Munn: Gave viewers hankering for the green one in the Quality Street box in creased Carolina Herrera. Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein: 'Does my bum look big in this?' Frankly, yes. And have you got it on backwards?

Last night's Emmys awards ceremony could broadly be described as a triumph of style and sophistication. Nevertheless, there were some A-listers who, despite paying celebrity stylists an arm and a leg (many earn a staggering £10,000 for a day's work), still fail to make the mark.

Worse, they wear outfits that are neither flattering nor photographer-friendly - a curse when the bank of ruthless paps are snapping at a rate of thousand frames a second.

The resulting fashion flops were few, but convincing. In her jade green satin Carolina Herrera gown - creased at the hips and not structured enough - actress Olivia Munn had viewers wondering why they were suddenly left with a hankering for the green one from the Quality Street box.

Her hair though - a sleek 20s do by celebrity stylist Mika Fowler - was her saving grace.

It was a tut-tut too for willowy Katie Holmes, who can do better than this cobalt sheath dress from the Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa. The colour is fantastic, the top half subtle and nicely figure-skimming - but the excess fabric at the waist and hips bloused out on the slim star.

Did she not ask husband Tom Cruise the dreaded question that every man fears before she left Cruise Towers in her limo: 'Does my bum look big in this'? Perhaps she did, but he didn't dare risk losing a limb by answering yes.

Frock, horror: Actress Zooey Deschanel, 31, in what bloggers have called a 'Pepto-Bismol' pink prom dress; 13-year-old Ariel Winter from Modern Family showed way too much cleavage for a girl just into her teens

The 'just got out of the shower' bun let her down too. Fab for a weekend around the house, frump for a night on the red carpet.
Elsewhere, Zooey Deschanel's 'Pepto-Bismol' pink prom dress won her few admirers (too pink, too taffeta, too creased), while Modern Family's young teen star Ariel Winter showed far too much cleavage for a girl of just 13.
As for Phoebe Price (yes, it's fine not to know who she is), her cluttered aesthetic - fascinator and flowers - was a fright-mare better suited to a suburban wedding. Simple sophistication works best on the red carpet.

THE JURY'S OUT...
We think Gwyneth Paltrow, Heidi Klum and Minka Kelly looked stunning at the Emmys in adventurous gowns that struck the right balance between fashionable and flattering. However, the celebrity blogger community had them down as fashion flops. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Public display of affection: Ashlee Simpson and Vincent Piazza cosy up at Emmy Awards after-party

By IONA KIRBY

Cute couple: Boardwalk Empire actor Vincent Piazza with girlfriend Ashlee Simpson at the HBO party

After a long night at the Emmy Awards, the stars were ready to let their manicured hair down.

And as well as seeing his TV show Boardwalk Empire earn Martin Scorsese the award for Best Director for a Drama Series, actor Vincent Piazza had a trophy of his own on his arm, in the form of girlfriend Ashlee Simpson.

The new couple were spotted getting cosy at the HBO Official After-Party, and it is the third night in a week the pair have paraded their new relationship in public.

They hit the red carpet this week arm in arm at the BAFTA 9th Annual Tea Party held at the L'Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Just two nights previously, the couple made their first ever official public appearance together when they attended the Boardwalk Empire second season première in New York.

Simpson appeared to be making it loud and clear that they are officially an item, as she affectionately stroked Piazza's face and lovingly cuddled up to her beau for the cameras.

Hands off, he's mine: The couple have paraded their new relationship in public several times this week

Other stars who favoured the HBO event were All My Children actress Leven Rambin, and Topher Grace, who rose to fame in That 70s show alongside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.

They were joined by Entourage actress Perrey Reeves and True Blood's Alfre Woodard as they worked the red carpet, while Game of Thrones stars in the form of Lena Headey, Michelle Fairley and Mark Addy were out in full force.

The other hottest after-party ticket was to the Governors Ball, the guestlist of which read like a who's who of Hollywood's most prominent TV faces.

Glee star Jane Lynch, who hosted the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, lead the way in a shimmering metallic frock.

She was joined by Modern Family actress Julie Bowen and writer Steve Levitan, who showed off their respective trophies after their show scooped five gongs at the ceremony.

Other winners proudly displaying their gongs for the cameras were Melissa McCarthy, who nabbed Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Mike & Molly, and Guy Pearce, who won Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role in Mildred Pierce.

They were joined by a host of television vampires including True Blood's Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, and Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, who wore a trailing red Donna Karen fishtail gown.

Proud: Guy Pearce, who won Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, and Melissa McCarthy, who won Best Actress in a Comedy Series, showed off their awards

Princess dress: Heidi Klum attended the event with her husband Seal, and wore a dress by previous Project Runway winner Christian Siriano

Famous pairings: The Killing's Michelle Forbes cuddled up to True Blood's Anna Paquin while Bones star David Boreanaz attended with Playmate wife Jaime Bergman

Paquin, who presented an award, cuddled up to The Killing actress Michelle Forbes as the pair sat down together to eat dinner following the long event.

The party was also favoured by So You Think You Can Dance presenter Cat Deeley and Project Runway host Heidi Klum, who each donned princess gowns for the occasion.

Deeley opted for a flowing white number by bridal specialist Monique Lhuillier while Klum showed her support for her TV series in a frilly strapless dress by one of Project Runway's former winners, Christian Siriano.

Glamour girls: Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev (L) and 500 Days of Summer star Zooey Deschanel

Golden girl: Actress Betty White also attended the lavish bash

Dressing to impress: Cat Deeley wore a flowing gown by Monique Lhuilier and Martha Plimpton of The Goonies fame also showed up

She was joined at the ceremony by husband Seal, who also accompanied her to the Governors Ball.

Other stars who attended the lavish bash included Bones star David Boreanaz and his former Playmate wife turned actress Jaime Bergman, and 500 Days of Summer star Zooey Deschanel, who sported a on-trend colourblock dress.

The guests tucked into food and watched an acrobat perform while dangling from the high ceiling.

And it was not only the young Hollywood television stars who attended the event at following the awards ceremony.

Martha Plimpton of The Goonies fame and Golden Girl Betty White also wound down at the glamorous party.

Awkward! New Two and a Half Men star Ashton Kutcher comes face to face with predecessor Charlie Sheen for the first time

By ANITA BENNETT

Uncomfortable: Ashton Kutcher looks at the floor as he chats to a magnanimous Charlie Sheen at the Emmys tonight

This is the moment that new Two and a Half Men star Ashton Kutcher came face-to-face with his controversial, yet undeniably illustrious predecessor at the Emmy Awards tonight.

Entourage star Jeremy Piven captured the incredible meeting that took place backstage at the star-studded event held at the Nokia theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.

Sheen took to his Twitter, too, of course, and wrote: 'Giving the new kid a little advice..! With @aplusk backstage at the Emmy's...,' under his own picture.

But it's Piven's snapshot that managed to capture how awkward the meeting actually was.

No posed up scene could convey 33-year-old Kutcher's unease as Charlie, 46, tails off from a smiling tirade about his glory days to look at his feet.

Indeed, Kutcher's segment with Jon Cryer in the ceremony was lacking somewhat in bite after the older man, who has baited Kutcher so publicly, gave a humble, heartfelt speech.

In a move that was clearly planned to get the audience talking, current Two and a Half Men stars Cryer and Kutcher took to the Emmy stage moments after Charlie walked away.

'This just happens!: Entourage star Jeremy Piven tweeted the fascinating snap

The two poked fun at Charlie with Cryer opening their bit by joking: 'Hello, I'm that guy from Pretty in Pink.'

Then Kutcher chimed in saying: 'I am not Charlie Sheen', as he looked at Cryer he added: 'Jon, I want to tell you something. I do not think that you are a troll,' referring to a insult Charlie levied at his former co-star a few months ago.

But both they and the audience had been wrong-footed by the sincere, and incredibly sad words from the man who once branded himself a 'warlock.'

Juxtaposed with this contrite monologue, their routine almost seemed like a cheap dig - proving that Sheen still knows how to steal a show when you least expect it.

Charlie, who was a surprise Emmy presenter, took the stage and offered a heartfelt good luck message to the cast and crew of the series from which he was dramatically fired.

Surprise: Charlie Sheen was only recently tapped to be an Emmy presenter, although there are reports his ex-boss, Chuck Lorre, wanted him removed from the awards show line up

The embattled Hollywood star presented the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, which he called 'my old category.'

Then he stunned the audience when he declared: 'I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody at Two and a Half Men.'

The star said: 'From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season.

'We spent eight wonderful years together and I know you will continue to make great television.'

It's been widely reported that Fox and the producers of the Emmy telecast were pressured by Two and a Half Men show runner Chuck Lorre to drop Charlie from the awards show line up.

While Fox refused to cave in to Lorre's reported demands, it's natural he would have misgivings about Charlie after the star branded him 'a little worm' and used several other choice words to describe the TV exec, earlier this year.

Jim Parsons, whose series, The Big Bang Theory, is also produced by Lorre, won in the category that Charlie presented.

Contrite: Charlie offered a heartfelt message to the cast and crew of Two and a Half men, wishing them luck with their new season

The two actors hugged, then Parsons said: 'This is so odd for so many reasons.'

Six months ago Charlie was fired by Warner Brothers from his role on Two and a Half Men.

A short time later, he launched an extraordinary tirade against Lorre during a broadcast on his internet TV show, Sheen's Korner.

During one episode of the web series, the star declared war on his old TV bosses in a rambling soliloquy.

Then he said about his famous firing: 'A high treason has occurred. The scales of justice are in a state of radical disarray,' adding: 'We must right this infantile wrong... see you all on the battlefield soon'.

In May, after it was announced that Ashton Kutcher would be joining Two and a Half Men, Charlie had even more to say.

And the winner is: Charlie prepares to open the envelope revealing who would receive the outstanding lead actor in a comedy series award

ongratulations: Charlie hands Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory his Emmy Award

Awkward: Parson's, whose show is also produced by Chuck Lorre, accepts a hug from Charlie

He told TMZ: 'Kutcher is a sweetheart and a brilliant comedic performer... Oh wait, so am I!!'

'Enjoy planet Chuck, Ashton,' he added, referring to the show's creator and his nemesis, Chuck Lorre. 'There is no air, laughter, loyalty, or love there.'

Charlie also predicted a steep drop in the ratings, adding: 'Enjoy the show America. Enjoy seeing a 2.0 in the demo every Monday, WB.'

But last week the controversial Hollywood veteran changed his tune. He admitted he would be open to returning to the show, during a candid interview with Matt Lauer on the Today Show.

He even voiced his support for his replacement, Ashton Kutcher, whose first episode airs tomorrow (Monday) night.

'If they thought that was a good idea, then I am completely open for that,' Charlie said about a possible cameo on the show which is relaunching after a summer long reboot.

Perfect timing: The current stars of Two and a Half Men took stage moments after Charlie walked away and they couldn't help but poke fun at the controversial actor

The new season is set to begin with a funeral service for Sheen's character Charlie Harper, who has been killed off.

But Sheen insists that despite his character being 'dead' there is still an opportunity to return.

'There was no body at the funeral, there was no urn.'

The actor has been doing the rounds of the chat shows to promote his roast, which airs on Comedy Central tomorrow night.

Best of British! Kate Winslet and Downton Abbey score big wins at the Emmys

By ANITA BENNETT

Emotional: Kate Winslet paid homage to her mum, after winning an Emmy Award tonight in Los Angeles

After tonight's Emmy Awards, there is no doubt, Hollywood adores its British imports.

Kate Winslet, Dame Maggie Smith and the ITV1 series Downton Abbey all reigned supreme at the awards ceremony.

Winslet picked up the lead actress in a miniseries or movie Emmy, for her starring role in the HBO drama Mildred Pierce.

Joy: Kate punched the air in delight as her name was announced

The 35-year-old played the titular role in the five-part series, which was set during the Great Depression.

Dressed in a stunning red gown, Kate gushed after winning: 'Mildred Pierce was capable of great acts of love as a mother.

'It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do with your life, you will never stop needing your mum. And I will never stop needing mine, so thanks mum.'

Winner: Kate's performance as a depression era mum earned her the Emmy Award

Based on a 1941 novel by American writer James M. Cain, the movie centres on a young mother with a talent for baking, who is forced to hunt for work to support herself and her two young daughters, after throwing her husband out of the house.

It had been nominated in 21 categories, but won just two awards, including a supporting actor statuette for British-born and Australian raised actor Guy Pearce.

Thanks mum: The actress said, 'It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do with your life, you will never stop needing your mum. And I will never stop needing mine'

Mildred Pierce's big night: Kate's co-star Guy Pearce also picked up an Emmy Award

Pearce joked: 'I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many many times.'

UK series Downton Abbey, which airs in the U.S. on the PBS network, was also a big winner.

It picked up four awards, including the coveted best miniseries or TV movie Emmy.

Thrilled: Pearce gave Kate a kiss backstage as they posed for pictures and stopped for a round of interviews

Pucker up: Winslet didn't hold back in her affection for presenter Hugh Laurie (left) and co-star guy Pearce

Celebration: Kate is surrounded by her co-stars before going up onstage to accept her award

The series also earned Essex native Maggie Smith, who was not at the ceremony, an Emmy in the Supporting actress category.

Upon hearing the news, Hugh Bonneville, at home in England, tweeted: 'Well done, Mother dear.'

It additionally won awards in the directing category for Brian Percival and a writing Emmy for Julian Fellowes.

Downton's finest: Elizabeth McGovern, Joanne Froggatt and Michelle Dockery hold one of the show's four awards

Fellowes said: 'This is really a David and Goliath story, except in this case Goliath was wonderful, some wonderful shows that we were up against, and it seems perfectly extraordinary that we've won.'

He added: 'None of us know what's going to be a hit, we make these shows, we hope for the best, but we don't know why sometimes it comes right and this evening is such a marvellous moment in all our lives because this evening it came right.'

Big winner: The UK series Downton Abbey cleaned up, winning four Emmy awards, including a writing nod for Julian Fellowes who appeared stunned that the series had won

He was joined by some of the production team and some stars of the show Elizabeth McGovern, who plays the Countess of Grantham, Michelle Dockery, who plays her eldest daughter Lady Mary and Joanne Froggatt, who fans will know as head housemaid Anna Smith.

The show won its four awards as the first episode of the second series aired on ITV in the UK last night.

British import wins big: The cast and crew line up for a picture with their awards

Other British stars with nominations at the ceremony included Hugh Laurie, Eileen Atkins and Idris Elba, who got a nod for his role in the BBC1 series Luther.

Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald of Boardwalk Empire was nominated in the supporting actress in a drama series category and fellow Scottish star, Alan Cumming, received a nod for his role as a political operative in The Good Wife.
