The bald identity: Matt Damon shaves his head for new tough guy role

By Daily Mail Reporter

New do: Matt Damon débuts new bald head as he wanders through Vancouver yesterday

He's known for his handsome leading man appearance, but Matt Damon unveiled a new look on a stroll through Vancouver yesterday.

The Bourne Identity star, who usually sports a full head of hair, displayed a freshly shaved head as he made a trip to the local post office in the Canadian city during a break from filming Elysium.

The 40-year-old actor looked casual in a khaki green T-shirt and jeans which he paired with simple black and white trainers while showing off his new bald look.

Matt appeared completely relaxed and at ease during his outing, a luxury he claims isn't afforded to all celebrities.

'I have friends who are like prisoners. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, for instance,' he told German television TELE 5 earlier this week.

'They can't just go someplace. If they go for a walk, it turns into an international incident.'

However his life has worked out slightly differently, despite his comparable super-stardom.

'I'm really lucky, because I have the best of both worlds. I do the work that I love and need, but don't need paramilitary troops to protect me when I walk out my front door.'

Spot the difference: Matt has always had a full head of hair

And he believes that his focus on things other than work have helped him retain a more private existence.

'Ever since I found my wife and we had children, my whole life revolves around that. It gave my life a dramatic change in direction,' he says.

'I'm not as crazy as most of the other stars. I don't really know why, probably because I married a woman who isn't an actress. And we live in New York,' he said.

'As long as we don't show up in typical tourist spots, we can walk the streets without being noticed. New Yorkers are very cool, they don't flip out if they see me.'

Matt and his wife Luciana married in 2005 and have four daughters.

Matt Damon gets a furry fright as he comes face-to-face with a giant brown bear (but luckily it's on the set of his new film)

By SOPHIE FORBES

Big and scary: Matt Damon comes face to face with a grizzly bear on the set of his new film We Bought A Zoo

Coming nose to nose with an enormous bear would be a terrifying experience for most people - but not Matt Damon.

The 40-year-old actor appeared to take it all in his stride when he came within inches of the animal as is climbed up the side of his car with it's enormous paws on the roof and it's nose pressed against the driver's side window.

Luckily for Matt, the massive animal was a fully trained and highly cooperative stunt bear that was being used during a scene for his new film We Bought A Zoo.

Uh oh: The actor looked a little nervous as the bear placed his nose right up to the window of his car

Matt actually appeared intrigued by the beast as he sniffed his way around the car his was sitting in.

The bear was also being directed by two handlers who stayed close by and gave orders to the animal by way of hand signals and audible commands.

In between takes the bear, believed to be a Grizzly which can weigh up to one ton, sat and relaxed in the sunshine.

He even appeared to notice a group of onlookers nearby and stared at them for a while.

What you looking at? The bear appears completely relaxed between takes and even checks out his audience

In the film, which is currently shooting in Los Angeles, Matt plays a father who moves his family to Southern California to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.

It is based on the true story of Benjamin Mee, who's family bought the failing Dartmoor Zoological Park in England in 2006 for £1.1 million.

In 2007 the zoo was the subject of a four part documentary called Ben's Zoo, which followed Benjamin and the family as they put the 30 acre zoological garden through a massive refurbishment before reopening to the public in August of that year.

Ben also wrote a book about the experience which In 2009 20th Century Fox bought the rights to.

The film is set to be released in the U.S. on the 23 December 2011.
