By Sarah Fitzmaurice

James Arthur is celebrating on Monday after being crowned the winner of X Factor 2012.

The 24-year-old put in the performance of his life in front of 10,000 screaming fans in Manchester to beat Jahmene Douglas to the coveted title.

The Middlesborough-born singer earned a standing ovation from the judges and brought the house down with his incredible rendition of Shontelle hit Impossible, which is now odds-on to be the Christmas No.1 single.

Speechless: James Arthur didn't know what to say as Dermot O'Leary revealed that he had won the X Factor 2012

After gaining 54 per cent of the public vote and being crowned the winner, James struggled to speak as he was interviewed by Dermot O'Leary.

He could only manage: 'Thank you, thank you so much. Have I really won? Wow. I don't know what to say.'

Runner-up Jahmene, who was also mentored by winning judge Nicole Scherzinger, was gallant in his defeat, and praised the show's victor, telling Dermot: 'It's such a blessing to even share a stage with such a talent, he's my idol.'

Warm embrace: After James was revealed as the winner he was seen locked in an embrace with Jahmene

Big hug: Nicole was seen hugging and kissing James very proud of her contestant

As the vote was announced, James looked stunned, before pulling in his competitor Jahmene for an emotional embrace.

Before performing his winner's single one more time, James told Dermot he is thrilled that the proceeds of the record are going to charity Together for Short Lives.

He said: 'I'm so pleased it's going to a good cause, thank you so much to everyone who voted for me - I'm so thankful.'

The X Factor victory then belted out the track, before being joined on stage by the majority of the rest of the show finalists, who hugged and jumped on James as they congratulated him.

So proud: Nicole was seen beaming with pride as she held hands with Jahmene who said that James was his 'idol'

Blown away: James couldn't believe he had won and was seen looking stunned as Dermot showed him his single

Before the winner was announced, James and Jahmene had treated viewers and the judges to two incredible performances.

Former Asda worker Jahmene took to the stage first with his heartfelt rendition of Robbie Williams' Angels - a performance which left the panel gushing.

Tulisa told Jahmene that he sounded 'amazing', adding: 'I'm really happy you picked that song.'

Meanwhile, Louis Walsh tipped Jahmene to win the show, telling him: 'You are an incredible role model.'

Gary Barlow also acknowledged Jahmene's tough start in life, saying: 'You have been battling with your past and fighting for your future you have done it with such dignity and grace.

'Congratulations another stunning night for you.'

But Jahmene's mentor Nicole struggled to control her emotions following the performance, breaking down as she listened to him sing.

Following the song, Nicole told Jahmene: 'You just bring spirit and hope to this song when you sing I just feel safe. Your my role model you are like a beacon of light. I love you sweetie..'

Massive celebration: As glitter reigned down onto the stage the other contestants ran out to greet him

James was next to take to the stage, performing his unique version of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get it On.

And the ladies' man couldn't resist a flirt with mentor Nicole during the peformance, holding her hand before moving on for a kiss with Tulisa.

After the rendition, Louis told him: 'You're original, you are real, you are honest.'

Tense moment: The trio were stood looking extremely nervous before the result was announced

So sweet: James was seen kissing Jahmene on the head on the Xtra Factor

Tulisa was quick to liken herself to James, telling him: 'I am going to say something to you now, James, which I know you will understand... I get you.

'You are the same as me. We come from the same place.'

She added: 'You deserve to win as an artist.'

Gary, who has previously backed James to win the show, said that he didn't need changing as an artist and he was 'ready right now' to release music.

Big hit: Jahmene was seeing hitting huge notes as he performed his first track

One more time: James was seen performing his new single to end the show

He told him: 'I'm ready to download your album right away.'

And James' mentor Nicole, who added that she was 'humbled' and 'so blessed' to have worked with him, told the singer: 'I felt like I was seeing the future, like next year when you are on tour.'

The second performance from the two finalists saw them belt out their individual winner's singles, with Jahmene kicking things off with his version of The Beatles' classic Let It Be.

Number one: Jahmene performed Robbie Williams' hit track Angels before singing The Beatles' Let It Be

Moved to tears: Nicole was seen crying following Jahmene's performance

Can't keep it together: Nicole was seen weeping as Jahmene was singing

The panel were clearly moved by the emotional performance with Louis telling Jahmene he had 'so much soul', while Gary complimented his 'unbelievable voice'.

Poking fun at Nicole's now infamous made-up phrases, Tulisa then said: 'That was a jahmazing shasmoment'.

After performing the track, Jahmene was shown footage of his family talking about him, which left him in floods of tears.

He's got it: James sang Marvin Gaye's hit Let's Get it On

James was up next with his version of Shontelle's Impossible - his winner's single.

After the performance, Gary told James he was proud of him for not changing throughout the competition, telling him: 'Please take one bit of advice never let anybody tell you what to do. You know best.'

The charmer has left the building! Gary Barlow leaves Tulisa stunned as he accuses her of having 'fag ash breath' on X Factor

By Sarah Bull and Owen Tonks

Things turned personal on The X Factor on Saturday night, when the normally charming Gary Barlow accused his fellow judge Tulisa of having 'fag ash breath'.

It came to a head after Tulisa criticised Gary for the song he had chosen for his act Christopher Maloney, saying to him: 'Gary, how many of these eighties classics are you going to let him keep destroying?'

Gary, who had clearly been contemplating his response while Tulisa spoke, then said: ''I don't know what's offended me more - what you said or the fag ash breath!'

Open-mouthed: Tulisa looked stunned as Gary accused her of having 'fag ash breath'

The charmer has left the building! The attack was most out-of-character for the usually gentlemanly Gary

And Tulisa was as shocked as everybody else by Gary's out-of-character comment, sitting there open-mouthed as she took in what he had said.

But as Dermot O'Leary spoke to Christopher following the performance, Tulisa interrupted saying: 'Just a note for Gary - lay off the red wine because I can really smell that as well.'

Later on ITV2's The Xtra Factor Barlow was asked if he had been drinking red wine and he said he had 'a little sip' in his dressing room and went on to apologise to his fellow judge.

Talking it out: Christopher talks to the judges after his performance on Saturday night

He said: 'Can I apologise to Tulisa - I mean it. You have the freedom to be as personal as you like to me for the rest of the series - insult me.'

Tulisa told The Xtra Factor that Barlow had once said he 'loved' the smell of cigarettes because it reminded him of the days he used to smoke and Barlow agreed.

But when asked if she had accepted Gary's apology, Tulisa replied: 'No, not yet.'

The row occurred after Christopher took to the stage performing Cutting Crew's Died In Your Arms - a heartfelt performance but once which lacked the Halloween theatrics of some of the others.

Take That: Gary was left red faced by Nicole Scherzinger's revealing catsuit and he diverted his eyes when the singer stood up to show off her costume to the audience at the beginning of the show

Offering up their advice: The X Factor judges Tulisa Contostavlos and Nicole Scherzinger offer up their advice to the aspiring pop stars during the show

Singing to stay: Judge Louis' group Disctrict3 sing their hearts out in a bid to keep their place in the competition

Nicole said afterwards: 'That was fun, I felt like I was watching an Eighties Halloween pop opera but I want to just to give you a hug. Good job on the vocals, I loved how you ended on the falsetto.'

Louis said: 'You haven't been in the bottom two yet but we are looking for a future recording star but I think you are more of a cabaret star.'

And while Gary may have shown his harsh side to N-Dubz singer Tulisa, he wasn't quite as cruel with his comments to contestant Rylan Clark.

Gary hasn't warmed to the aspiring pop star in recent weeks but he made an effort to give the entertainer some constructive criticism following his performance.

The Take That star may be changing his opinion of Rylan after his former bandmate Robbie Williams showed his support for Rylan during last week's show and offered up his advice during a masterclass in London on Wednesday.

And Rylan, who turned 24 this week, was pleased with the tuition he received from Robbie - the hopeful took to Twitter to express his delight following the session.

He wrote: 'Such an amazing birthday present @robbiewilliams thank you for everything you said. See you again Sunday x'

Is this the most dramatic X Factor reaction EVER? Rylan Clark collapses on floor and lets out gut-wrenching sobs upon hearing he's through to Live Shows

By Sarah Fitzmaurice and Louise Saunders

..He is one of the most flamboyant contestants to have entered this year's X Factor.

So it was no surprise Rylan Clark put on a display of epic proportions upon learning he was through to the Live Finals of the competition on Sunday night's episode of the ITV1 talent show.

In what was perhaps the most dramatic reaction of all time, the 23-year-old Essex boy put on an Oscar-worthy performance as he collapsed to the floor in a fit of emotion.

Breakdown: Rylan Clark was left weeping as Nicole Scherzinger made his dreams come through

With his reaction to receiving the good news from judge Nicole Scherzinger verging on the ridiculous, the 23-year-old wannabe was left rolling around on the floor unable to speak as he dealt with his emotions.

Choking back his tears, Rylan let out a series of gut-wrenching sobs as Nicole looked on in amusement.

Finally able to compose himself for long enough to give his new mentor a big hug, the flamboyant singer couldn't seem able to believe that he was through.

Dramatic: Rylan couldn't contain his emotions as he was told he would perform in the Live Shows

Amusing: Judge Nicole Scherzinger couldn't stop giggling as she watched Rylan roll around on the floor

'Is this a wind-up? Are you having me on?,' he questioned.

Rylan later added: 'We're going to have a right laugh.'

But despite his somewhat over the top reaction to the news, Rylan insisted he isn't the 'joke' entry of the competition.

He said: 'I think at the beginning of this process everyone looked at me as a bit of a joker and then people couldn’t be more wrong. I had to go in there and show that I can be serious and be a singer.

All too much: The Essex lad couldn't control himself and burst into floods of tears

'I haven’t really got that much back home, I want to turn that around I want to be achieving something rather than keep being a let-down. I have got nothing to go back to now. I’ve got too much riding on this.'

Meanwhile, Nicole said of her act: 'Rylan my love… he’s all spikes and sparkle, we need diva music and empowering diva anthems for him. He would definitely have his own audience.'

And although Twitter went into a flurry of activity with users poking fun at the model's reaction, it would seem Kitty Brucknell - who reached the Live Shows of last year's X Factor - has found something of a soulmate in the eccentric hopeful.

Good news: Nicole was evidently tickled by the Essex boy's flamboyant behaviour

In need of a tissue? Rylan wiped his tears away with the assistance of a nearby cushion

She tweeted: 'Omg omg Rylan!!! I'm so sorry that was way funny!
kittystylebreakdown ;) u are a legend! And I want you to win like now!!

'u are AMAZING and awesome and I love u.'

Nicole picked James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas as the two other acts to reach the Live Shows.

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow chose Kye Sones, Carolynne Poole and Melanie Masson as his three acts, as Louis Walsh put groups GMD3, MK1 and Union J through.

And Tulisa Contostavlos opted for Ella Henderson, Lucy Spraggan and Jade Ellis.

Not so subtle: Rylan did little to hide how he felt as he rolled around on the floor

'Rylan looks great... but the man CAN'T SING!' Axed X Factor star Joseph Whelan blasts Essex boy Clark as he says show is fixed

By Sarah Bull

•Whelan was a fan favourite before being axed on Sunday night
•But said he didn't regret taking part in the ITV show
•Rylan has responded with a foul-mouthed rant on Twitter

He had been one of the favourites to win The X Factor, after wowing viewers with his incredible voice and sexy looks.

But after being sensationally axed from the ITV programme after the bootcamp stage of the show last weekend, single father Joseph Whelan has hit out at the series - accusing it of being a fix.

Whelan made the claims as he blasted bosses for putting through Rylan Clark instead, insisting the Essex-born star got through to judges' houses on his looks and personality instead of his vocal talent.

It's a fix! Joseph Whelan has blasted The X Factor after he was axed from the show on Sunday night

He told The Sun: 'Rylan has a great look and great personality – but the man can’t sing!'

Whelan, who was tipped as a favourite among fans after performing Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love in his first audition, added that he had no idea he was going to be axed from the show, because bosses had been continually tipping him for success.

He said: 'The X Factor set me up for a fall. They shafted me by praising me so highly – then sending me home.

'He just can't sing!' Whelan also accused bosses of wanting to cause controversy by putting through eccentric star Rylan Clark

Favourite: Whelan won over viewers with his vocal talents and rocker voice

'I nailed all three of my performances and didn’t get one negative comment from the judges. So I was in complete shock when they kicked me out.

'But the X Factor loves controversy. They obviously decided the backlash was worth getting rid of me for.'

However, after hearing Whelan's comments, Rylan was quick to respond, using his Twitter page to launch a foul-mouthed rant.

'He's got a great look': Former model Rylan has entertained viewers with his unique voice and outrageous look

Styling it up: Rylan's outfits have been getting increasingly outrageous during his time on The X Factor

He tweeted: 'I've been told not to react to all the s**t on here but sorry, I'm a mouthy b*****d so I'm gonna. I've earned my place at judges houses just like every other person in this comp, not everyone is going to like me I know that.

'But don't judge me for doing something I've always wanted to do, for those who are supportive thank you so much, it means the world. For those than ain't. Go and have a w**k.'
Whelan then wrote on his Twitter page: 'Please guys don't blame @RylanClark for the @TheXFactor decision. He is a great guy and I wish him all the best. He is born to be a celeb X'

Along with Rylan, the other boys going through to the judges' houses stage of The X Factor are Jahmene Douglas, Jake Quickenden, James Arthur, Nathan Fagle-Gayle and Adam Burridge.

The boys: Jahmene Douglas, Nathan Fagle-Gayle, Jake Quickenden, Adam Burridge and James Arthur with Rylan

However, many fans are less than impressed that Whelan didn't make the cut, with some even starting a Facebook campaign to get him back on the show.

But Whelan added that he doesn't regret taking part in the show, saying: 'I’m not sorry I entered, though. Despite everything, it has been a great platform for me.

'Maybe I’ll beat the winner to the Christmas No1 this year.'

An X Factor spokesman told The Sun of Whelan's fix claims: 'The standard is very high this year and not all acts can make it through to the next stage.'

Is Newcastle a 'TFZ' (Talent Free Zone)? Nicole Scherzinger left unimpressed after teenager Sophie Stokle leads tone-free wannabes at X Factor auditio

By Kimberley Dadds

..She flew all the way from Los Angeles ready to be wowed by what was on offer at the Newcastle auditions.

But in what could be seen as a swipe at Cheryl Cole, X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger declared that Newcastle was a Talent Free Zone

It was only last year that the former Pussycat Doll was drafted in to replace Geordie Cole when she was axed as a judge from the US X Factor panel.

Disappointment: Teenager Sophie Stokle was convinced she would impress the judges but left them wincing with her singing

And as she entered the studio ready to witness the auditionees on offer, Scherzinger took a pop at the Newcastle accents.

She remarked; 'I'm not going to lie, I'm having trouble understanding.'

Nicole then added after a long day of disappointing auditions: 'I came from Los Angeles for this... I expected more from Newcastle. TFZ, it's a Talent-Free Zone.'

Ouch! Nicole Scherzinger was mainly left unimpressed with the Newcastle auditions after their bizarre attempts to show off their 'talents'

No tone: All four judges gave Sophie a 'No' straight away, despite her mother insisting she had amazing vocal ability

Although she was proved wrong later on when stand out singer James Arthur walked on and wowed with his acoustic rendition of Tulisa's Young, Nicole seemed to be proved correct for the majority of the acts.

The biggest disappointment of the night came from teenager Sophie Stokle.

She promised big things and the relief could be seen on the judges' faces when she walked on stage with her pop star-style get-up.

Oh dear! Newcastle wannabe Billy Moore even admitted himself that he was murdering his track choice and was left letting the audience finish the words

And she seemed convinced, along with her mother, that she was set to be the next big thing ready to wow the panel.

But Nicole, along with Gary Barlow, Tulisa and Louis Walsh, were left grimacing when she took to the mic.

After putting them through a strangled version of Jennifer Hudson's Love You I Do she was put in her place.

Really? Nicole looked at the end of her tether following a round of cringe worthy performances

Bizarre: The height of bad auditions came from 20-year-old 'Haus of Danni' who simply made noises into the microphone

Grrrr... Tulisa found the funny side after the string of bad and humorous acts

Gary said: 'I want to be encouraging but it was vocally really, really bad.'

Scherzinger swiped: 'You have power and projection, unfortunately we were missing the pitch and the tone... You need all of those things.'

And as Sophie walked off stage to a gobsmacked mum, Tulisa commented: 'Where are the parents? If that was my child I'd tell her: "Stop it!"'

Feeling 'nervewrack': Essex boy Rylan split the judges, with Gary Barlow being shocked and the other three putting him through

Which caused Barlow to bemoan: 'I don't believe there's no talent here.'

Although he was in for a long ride as throughout the evening they were treated to Haus of Dannii, who came dressed as a tiger and screamed into the microphone, to which Nicole said: 'You obviously have your own vision in your head.'

While Billy Moore admitted himself that he had murdered track Don't Stop Believin'.

Confused: The judges, including guest Rita Ora, couldn't hide the disdain from their faces

Poser: Rylan got his chance to show off his personality as he posed in a VT before his audition

After failing to show off his skills, he chastised himself and blasted: 'Sorry I'm absolutely murdering it... this was a bad idea.'

Barlow then said: 'I agree'.

Although he did still provide entertainment as the whole auditorium then joined him with him, as he found the funny side and commented: 'Exactly, you can sing it better than me!'

Meanwhile, earlier in the show the audience were treated to a snippet at the London auditions.

And it was Essex star Rylan who stood out the most.

Giving it his all: Rylan caused giggles in the crowd with his cheeky personality and confusing performance

A VT showed him preening himself with an assistant giving him a fake tan, waxing and tweezing his hair and perfecting his long bleached locks.

And his performance caused just as much drama as he sang a dance song, after boasting that Gary Barlow's parents had come to see his Take That tribute act in Ibiza.

Gary, of course, shot that rumour down and was equally unimpressed with his attempt, telling him: 'Love your personality and hate your voice, really strange song choice.'

But the singer was left outraged when the other three judges, including guest panellist Rita Ora, decided to put him through.
