She may have been playing mother to her doll, but Suri Cruise still knows how to behave like a typical six-year-old.

The child was seen sticking her tongue out and pulling playful faces on Monday during a shopping trip with her mother Katie Holmes.

As she was carried by the actress, Suri poked her tongue out, waved her hand and frowned while clutching her baby doll which was wrapped in a pink blanket.

The pair had been visiting Make Meaning, an arts and crafts centre in Manhattan that holds classes and events for people to create jewellery, gift cards, candles and even cake decorating.

However, Suri appeared tired and after walking alongside Katie, she obviously wanted to be carried.

Suri clung to her 'baby', which was wearing what appeared to be a real nappy.

She was also seen carrying a quirky bag, with the black brim in shape of a bustier.

It was detailed with pink tutu netting and a polka dot band around the middle.

It is likely that the bag belonged to Suri, but equally, the kitsch handbag is eccentric enough for any Big Apple A-lister.

Meanwhile, Suri came over a little shy while walking the streets, burrowing her head into her jacket.

And today was no different as Katie Holmes made the most of the last days of summer with Suri by teaching her how to ride a bike.

Sure to be a memorable time in her life as she tries to get good enough to take off her training wheels, the tiny fashionista was dressed to impress in a summer frock that perfectly matched her pink wheels.

While Holmes dressed simply in a pair of jeans and a sheer white T-shirt, as well as low heel boots for the outing, Suri made more of an effort for the experience.

Coordinating her pink helmet to her bike, she began rather wobbly but soon seemed to get into the swing of it while Katie held a supportive palm on her handle bar.

A coy Suri didn’t appear too willing to give a progress report as they left Manhattan’s West Side bike path and sat by a water fountain.

Suri has been the receiver of a lot of love lately after Holmes lodged legal papers in June to divorce husband Tom Cruise, citing 'irreconcilable differences' for the split.

Tom headed straight to the Big Apple after shooting on the his latest movie Oblivion wrapped in California on Monday and he flew in overnight.

His sister Cass Mapother was also seen arriving at the establishment with toys in tow.

Both looked impeccably stylish, with the mother-of-one leading the way in a red and blue striped dress.

But Katie Holmes is clearly trying to do the best she can for daughter Suri, as she bought her toys and treated her to a face painting session in New York today.

No doubt the Dawson's Creek favourite will have been hoping giving the six-year-old some gifts would be a good distraction amid the upheaval of her separation from Tom Cruise.

It appears Suri has similar tastes to her playmate, as they wore almost identical face paint, and chose similar toys.

The youngster seemed particularly taken by a unicorn, perhaps because the mystical creature was a central plot device in her devout Scientologist father's 1985 cult fantasy favourite film Legend, in which he played woodland elf-like character Jack o' the Green.

It is to her credit that in the midst of the turbulence in her private life, Katie seems resolutely focused on just one thing, her daughter's well being.

It's Suri's fourth play date this week alone - she has visited Chelsea Piers for a gymnastics class, met animals at the Central Park Zoo and enjoyed the desserts on offer at Alice's Tea Cup on the Upper East Side.

As the pair headed off today, it seemed she just wanted to be in the comfort of her mother's arms and Katie complied, scooping her up and carrying her to their destination.

Expectations that the divorce of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes would be a long, drawn out and bitterly contested legal fight may not be realised according to new reports.

Attorneys for the estranged couple are reported to be finalising a full divorce settlement behind closed doors that will not even require Holmes or Cruise to make a court appearance in either California or New York.

The legal teams for the separated couple are trying to thrash out agreements on properties, child support, visitation and whether the pair will have joint custody of their six-year-old girl Suri or whether Holmes will keep sole custody as she filed for in her divorce petition.

Mr Mayefsky is a shrewd operator who has a habit of airing the grievances of his clients in front of the media.

He is known for demanding an even split of proceeds in divorces and for winning £28 million for the wife of a Wall Street financier in a landmark case in 2003.

RadarOnline reports the actress will ask Cruise for child support at their first divorce hearing in New York on July 17.

'Tom's Los Angeles lawyers have officially been given notice. Tom's New York lawyer will appear and it's undetermined at this time if Tom will be in court also because he is currently shooting a movie.'

Mayefsky's co-counsel, Jonathan Wolfe, is a partner in the relatively low-profile New Jersey-based firm of Skoloff & Wolfe.

Crucially, Mr Wolfe is an expert in what is euphemistically known in American legal circles as 'business evaluation' (in plain English, that means he is a terrier when it comes to finding hidden money).

They want to establish Tom’s exact wealth, which suggests 33-year-old Holmes is not prepared to walk away with the relatively modest settlement of £10 million that has been widely quoted — £2 million for every year of their five-year marriage as stipulated in the couple's 100-page pre-nuptial agreement.

Katie's meeting on Friday came after Cruise's attorney Bert Fields lashed out at the actress and her legal team, accusing them of 'playing the media'.

However after she made the decision to file divorce papers last Friday, Katie is set to step out of Tom's Scientology shadow and back into the spotlight.

The 50-year-old actor was said to be 'blindsided' when his wife filed for divorce from him last week after five years of marriage and sought legal custody of their child - intends to go to court in Los Angeles in person to ensure he is legally allowed to see the youngster.

'Tom won't tolerate it and told his lawyers that if he personally needs to go to court and make a plea in front of the judge for an order allowing him to see his daughter, he will.'

It is believed Katie wants legal custody because she is worried about Tom's devotion to sci-fi cult Scientology and the effect the quasi-religious sect may have on their six-year-old daughter.

However a source told TMZ: '[Katie] was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies.

'This is not a fight over religion. It's being used as a way to hurt Tom.'

Meanwhile, an interview with Katie from next month's ELLE magazine hints that she may not have been happy in the relationship for some time.

Discussing turning 33, she told the US publication: 'I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I'm staring to come into my own. It's like a new phase.'

Asked about her marriage, she admitted she wanted to focus on herself.

She said: 'He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.'
