Another boy! Stacey Solomon is 'doing well' after giving birth to her second son

By Kimberley Dadds

She's already mother to one son, four-year-old Zachary.

And now Stacey Solomon is celebrating after welcoming another boy into the world earlier today.

The singer gave birth to her second son in the last few hours and is said to be 'doing well' since the labour.

It's a boy! Stacey Solomon is celebrating after giving birth to her second son earlier today

Stacey's representative Max Clifford announced the news on his Twitter page earlier this evening.

He wrote: 'Congratulations to our lovely client @5taceysolomon who gave birth to a baby boy earlier today, both baby and mum are doing well.'

It is her first child with fiance Aaron Barnham, who she became engaged to in December after three years of dating.

New mum: The former X Factor star was due to give birth to her first son with fiance Aaron Barnham on Monday but went into labour on Saturday morning

Zachary is her son from a previous relationship.

The former X Factor star was due to give birth on Monday, but she welcomed the tot two days early today.

Although it is not yet known if she has given him a name yet.

Aaron, 24, proposed to the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star in New York during a romantic horse and carriage ride in Central Park.

Happy news: Stacey's representative Max Clifford announced the birth on his Twitter page

Stacey took to her Twitter page to gush after the proposal: 'I can't believe he's finally asked me...'

Their engagement came just a month after she revealed she was pregnant with a sibling for Zachary.

Although she sparked controversy, quite literally, in March when she was photographed puffing on a cigarette while heavily pregnant.

She later broke down in tears on live TV as she apologised on This Morning for the 'selfish' act.

Asked by presenter Holly Willoughby if she had considered the harmful effects smoking might have on her baby, Stacey replied: 'At the end of the day, nothing that I can say makes it right. All I can say is that from the day I found out that I was pregnant, I have tried my best to give up.

'I completely understand why people would be angry, because for some people it's uncomprehendable.

'I understand that it's a selfish thing to do, so I don't think the comments are unjustified, although I do thing some are a bit harsh.'

Isn't it time to put your feet up now? Heavily pregnant Stacey Solomon looks tired on night out

By Kimberley Dadds

Glamorous mum-to-be: Stacey Solomon showed off her bump as she attended the Tatiana Hair Extensions store launch party in London

She looked glamorous enough, but her flawless make-up couldn't hide the tiredness around Stacey Solomon's eyes.

The former X Factor contestant, 22, has only got about six weeks to go before she's due to give birth to her second child.

But as a mother of one to son Zachary, four, the singer turned TV presenter, she's probably still quite run off her feet.

Blue-ming: The singer got her own hair extensions from the salon earlier this month and debuted the look on her night out

However, no one could blame her for making the most of her time before she's knee deep in nappies again.

The former X Factor star was on hand to celebrate the launch party for Tatiana Hair Extensions' new store in London last night.

And she took the opportunity to show off her bump in a floor-length navy blue frock with a beige stripe below her bust.

Blooming: The singer got her own hair extensions from the salon earlier this month and debuted the look on her night out

Stacey matched the dress with a pair of beige Terry De Havilland snakeskin wedges, while she gave it a splash of colour with red painted toes and a splash of scarlet lipstick.

And she also made the most of the sunny weather in the city by making it a summery get-up with sunglasses on her head.

She was obviously excited about going out for the evening, as she wrote on Twitter earlier in the day: 'Excited about @TatianaHairExts launch today !! Xxx.'

Stacey showed her fashion sense as she posed for the cameras by completing the outfit with a matching beige leather bag.

The singer opened up earlier this month about how she wants to look her 'very best' ready for the impending arrival.

To start her beauty regime the expectant mother visited Tatiana Hair Extensions to undergo a transformation with long blonde locks.

And it ensured she was a guest of honour at their party, where she showed off the new look as she wore her hair down and poker straight as she posed with the owner, Tatiana Karelina.

Making the most of it: Stacey, who is almost eight months pregnant, enjoyed a night out ahead of the impending birth

Speaking about her new look, the 22-year-old said: 'With the birth of my baby fast approaching, I wanted a new look ready for spring.

'I have decided to go with some flashes of honey blended into my natural hair colour for a fresh finish similar to Jennifer Aniston.

'I want to look my very best at the birth! I love the way the hair colour makes me look slightly suntanned as well.'

And her appearance was a hit with owner Tatiana, who wrote on Twitter this morning: '@Denisepdavies so blessed to have such amazing friends around! Thank you so much sweetie! You and @5taceySolomon made the party!! Xx.'

Stacey replied: '@TatianaHairExts my pleasure had a great time and got a great big bag of pick-a-mix me and bump were very happy hahaha!!! Xxxx.'

'I want to look my very best for the birth': Stacey Solomon puts smoking furore aside as she enjoys a bit of pampering

By Emily Sheridan

Stacey Solomon has had a difficult two weeks after she was barraged with criticism over her controversial decision to smoke while pregnant.

And after keeping a low-profile since the furore, the reality star has ventured out and about for a spot of pre-baby pampering.

The X Factor 2009 finalist, 22, enjoyed a bit of 'me time' as she decided to get some blonde hair extensions.

Smiling again: Stacey Solomon shows off her new hair extensions as he leaves the Tatiana salon in Kensington, West London

With just under eight weeks to go before she is due to give birth to her second child, Solomon has been counting down the days.

Popping into Tatiana Hair Extensions Salon yesterday, Solomon said she wanted to look like Jennifer Aniston.

She said: 'With the birth of my baby fast approaching, I wanted a new look ready for spring. I have decided to go with some flashes of honey blended into my natural hair colour for a fresh finish similar to Jennifer Aniston.

Luscious locks: Solomon sits patiently as the hairstylist puts in the extensions

'I want to look my very best at the birth! I love the way the hair colour makes me look slightly suntanned as well.'

When she left the salon a few hours later, Solomon looked thrilled with her caramel locks.

Solomon was back with a smile on her face following a tearful appearance on This Morning earlier this month.

In need of a pick me up: Solomon has been heavily criticised in recent weeks for smoking while pregnant

She broke down as she revealed her guilt at continuing to smoke while pregnant.

Although she has cut down from her 10 a day, Solomon is struggling to quit altogether.

She said on This Morning: 'At the end of the day, nothing that I can say makes it right. All I can say is that from the day I found out that I was pregnant, I have tried my best to give up. I completely understand why people would be angry, because for some people it's incomprehensible.

Lighten up: Solomon said she was going for a Jennifer Aniston look

'As soon as you get pregnant, you think you need so stop. I did smoke between 5 and 10 a day, but I completely cut down and from there on I have been trying to stop.

'I'm smoking] between 1 and 3 a day, if that... I just thought I would be able to quit. And some days I've done really, really well and had none but there are some days when I have had some. I'm doing my best to just go without, but sometimes it's not just as easy to cut it out.'

Following the backlash, Solomon was also removed from the shortlist for the Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mum of the Year campaign.

'Nothing I can say will make it right,' says a tearful Stacey Solomon as she admits she's STILL smoking up to three cigarettes a day

By Sarah Bull

She's found herself at the centre of a huge amount of controversy since photographs first emerged of her smoking while pregnant.

But Stacey Solomon today showed that the stress of the scandal is taking its toll, as she was reduced to tears during an interview on This Morning.

Stacey was talking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on the show about her actions and struggled to control her emotions as she admitting indulging in her habit while seven months along with her second child is a 'selfish' thing to do.

Emotional: Stacey Solomon was reduced to tears during an interview on This Morning when she spoke about pictures of her smoking which emerged over the weekend

Asked by Holly if she had considered the harmful effects smoking might have on her baby, Stacey replied: 'At the end of the day, nothing that I can say makes it right.
All I can say is that from the day I found out that I was pregnant, I have tried my best to give up. I completely understand why people would be angry, because for some people it's uncomprehendable.

'I understand that it's a selfish thing to do, so I don't think the comments are unjustified, although I do thing some are a bit harsh.'

Stacey also insisted that she has '100 per cent cut down' from the amount of cigarettes she smoked before she fell pregnant.

She added: 'As soon as you get pregnant, you think you need so stop.

Stacey was also asked how she felt about being cut out of the Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mum of the Year campaign.

She said: 'I feel that they have to set a good example so it's absolutely their decision and I have to accept it because at the end of the day they can't be seen to support that.'

Phillip and Holly also asked Stacey, who has a four-year-old son Zachary from a previous relationship, how her fiancé Aaron Barnham feels about her smoking while pregnant.

Struggling: The singer appeared to be finding it difficult to control her emotions during the interview

'Did you not think of the harmful effects smoking would have on your baby?' Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield asked the questions people wanted answering

Stacey replied: 'Aaron is not happy with it but at the same time he's supportive of me and he will help me no matter what. He's always trying to do things with me - all he can do is support me.'

Struggling to hold back her tears, Stacey continued: 'I don't condone it in any way and I think it's important that people know that. I don't want people to think it's OK or that I think it's OK.'

Asked what else she is doing to quit the cigarettes, Stacey said she was using electric cigarettes and considering hypnotherapy, at which point Phillip suggested she might want to talk to the show's Dr Chris about other ways she may be able to kick the habit.

'I know it's not OK', says pregnant Stacey Solomon after smoking pictures... as she's AXED as Celebrity Mum of the Year

By Sarah Bull and J J Anisiobi

Keeping her head down: Pregnant Stacey Solomon was seen out today after the controversial shots of her smoking emerged at the weekend

She shocked fans when pictures emerged of her smoking despite being seven months pregnant.

But now Stacey Solomon has opened up about her struggle to kick cigarettes, admitting she 'knows it's not ok'.

Stacey's admission came as it was revealed the 22-year-old singer has been axed as Foxy Bingo's Celebrity Mum of the Year.

Struggling: The 22-year-old singer looked upset and in her own world as she arrived back home

The former X Factor singer rang in to Loose Women to speak about the pictures on the show today, and said that while she wasn't trying to defend her actions, she felt some of the criticism she received was a 'little harsh'.

She said: 'All of the responses are something that I deserve. I don’t for one minute think I can sit here and say it is ok – so I can accept that kind of criticism and although it’s not nice to hear I know that its true the health risks and maybe that will give me more power to stop it and nip it in the bud.

'There’s ups and downs to people being critical because it makes you think oh my God, I really must sort this out and you feel even more guilty than you already do because don’t get me wrong I felt guilty before all of this came out.

'But there is a little a bit of you that thinks I love my children with all my heart so some of the comments are a little bit harsh.'

Sneaky puff: Seven months pregnant Stacey was spotted smoking down an alley way, but says the criticism she has received is a 'little harsh'

Stacey's admission came as she was seen outside her home this morning looking upset and dishevelled as she struggles to cope with the controversy she has caused with the shots.

And Stacey, whose second baby is due on 7th May, continued: 'It's absolutely devastating not just because I saw the pictures in the paper – its something I’m not proud of and I’m really, really struggling with in general.

'It’s not just because everyone knows now. Its something that I don’t want to do and that I’m not happy doing so it’s horrible.'

Coming clean: Stacey rang in to the Loose Women show today to explain the shots

Stacey also said she had been trying to give up during her pregnancy, adding: 'It’s a horrible habit and I care more about my children than anything in the whole wide world so anything I can do to give up means more to me than anything else or what anyone thinks.'

Stacey, Foxy Bingo's mum of the year, had been in the middle of a photo shoot in Fulham, south west London, when she slipped outside for a break and was seen puffing away on a cigarette.

The chatterbox queen has four-year-old Zachary, with ex-boyfriend Dean Cox, while her latest addition to the family will be with fiancé Aaron Barham.

Explaining the reason for axeing Stacey as their Celebrity Mum of the Year, a statement from Foxy Bingo read: 'Following stories in the newspapers in recent days, Foxy Bingo has taken the decision to stand Stacey down from her position as judge on Foxy Mum and from the voting shortlist for Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mum of the Year 2012, the winner of which will be announced next week.

'Stacey has apologised to the people at Foxy Bingo and is sorry and embarrassed by her actions. We understand Stacey is doing everything she can to stop smoking and in recent times has cut back dramatically. She's naturally disappointed but accepts Foxy Bingo's decision.'

Stars still in the running for the title include Natasha Giggs, Peaches Geldof and Katie Price.

'I only have a few cigs a day': Seven months pregnant Stacey Solomon caught out smoking four times in two hours

By J J Anisiobi

Sneaky puff: Seven months pregnant Stacey Solomon was spotted smoking down an alley way

Seven months pregnant Stacey Solomon was caught smoking four cigarettes in two hours as she stood in an alley way clutching her baby bump.

The 22-year-old reportedly claimed that although she was embarrassed at being caught out, her doctor told her that it was OK to smoke.

The former X Factor contestant and Foxy Bingo's mum of the year was in the middle of a photo shoot in Fulham, south west London, when she slipped outside for a break and was seen puffing away on the cancer causing sticks.

She told The People newspaper: I know it doesn't look good but I only have a few cigs a day.'

The face of frozen food store Iceland also said that she had not let her fans down and wanted to quit in the future.

The mother-of-one claimed that her doctor said it would be 'more stressful' on her body if she gave up altogether.

Feeling stressed: Stacey was once voted Foxy Bingo's mum of the year

Her publicist Max Clifford told the Mail Online: 'Stacey has been smoking one or two cigarettes a day but she is desperately trying to quit and she is very embarrassed about it all.

'She's going to be trying electronic cigarettes and she knows it's bad but the stress of having a baby and all her work commitments have been difficult.'

Bad habit: Stacey, picture earlier this week, said that she smokes up to six cigarettes per day

The chatterbox queen has four-year-old Zachary, with ex-boyfriend Dean Cox, while her latest addition to the family will be with fiancé Aaron Barham.

When asked if she was enjoying her pregnancy, the star told New! magazine: 'Not at all. The novelty wears off after a few months. I can’t wait to be a normal size again – and eat prawns.

Expecting: Aaron Barham, pictured in 2011, is engaged to Stacey and is a father-to-be

'I think I have [gained weight] but everyone keeps giving me that line "Oh, you look so small". I’m like, "No, I look huge!". As soon as I find out I’m pregnant, my hips always widen.'

She said she was probably a size 12 and was a size eight when she fell pregnant.

But she added that she wouldn't be in a rush to lose her baby weight.

'I’m not one of these people who believes in leaving the hospital and being a size zero because I won’t. I’ll be this size for a few months. Hopefully, I won’t eat as much as I won’t be feeding me and a baby.'

Stacey Solomon goes for trendy dip-dyed look as she gets long blonde hair extensions

By Sarah Bull

Trendy: Stacey Solomon sported a trendy dip-dyed look after getting blonde hair extensions in London yesterday

She had an incredibly busy weekend after taking part in the London triathlon.

So it's no wonder Stacey Solomon appeared to be in her element as she had her hair done yesterday.

The 21-year-old star kicked back and relaxed as she had blonde hair extensions added to her 'do to give her that trendy dip-dyed look.

After having the extensions matched in both colour and texture, they were added to Stacey's hair and teased into relaxed curls ready for the summer.

Dressed down in taupe-coloured jeans, a short-sleeved top and fur-lined boots, Stacey read magazines and chatted to the stylist as she was primped and preened.

Watching intently as the extensions were put in by hair extension expert Tatiana Karelina, Stacey looked delighted with the end result as she left the boutique salon Tatiana Hair Extensions in Kensington yesterday.

Patience is a virtue: Stacey watches intently as expert Tatiana Karelina put in the extensions at the boutique salon Tatiana Hair Exensions in Kensington

Kicking back and relaxing: Stacey appeared to be enjoying her down time after a busy weekend which saw her compete in the London triathlon

And Stacey later tweeted: 'Loving my new hair thanks so much @TatianaHairExts xxx'

When she first came onto the scene in The X Factor in 2009, Stacey had light brown hair highlighted with blonde streaks.

But the singer has experimented with a variety of different styles, going from bleached blonde locks to almost jet black when she competed on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! last year.

Stacey's new locks must come as a welcome change from having to put her brown hair up in a swimming cap for the triathlon over the weekend.

And the singer's new look comes ahead of her presenting a series of outside broadcasts on ITV show This Morning later this summer alongside fellow celebrities including Imogen Thomas, Brian Dowling and Su Pollard.

But This Morning isn't the only commitment Stacey has over the summer.

The former X Factor contestant will also be working hard on her debut perfume, Smile, which is set to launch in September.

Announcing the fragrance news last month, Stacey said: 'I can't believe I've been approached to make a perfume. Little old me from Dagenham!'

Ever-changing: Stacey is constantly updating her appearance, opting for blonde hair and then going for a dark look as she competed on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! last year

Bored are we Stacey? Miss Solomon struggles to contain yawns as she ditches the bob for long and luscious locks

By Sarah Fitzmaurice

Bit bored? Stacey Solomon struggled to contain a yawn as she spent the day in the hairdresser getting hair extensions

Achieving the perfect hairstyle can easily take hours – just ask Stacey Solomon.

The former X Factor contestant appeared extremely bored as she spent most of her day at the hairdressers in London yesterday, having extremely long hair extensions put in.

The Dagenham-born singer struggled to contain her boredom and was seen yawning as she sat in the stylist’s chair.

But achieving long and luscious locks takes time, and man-power, and Stacey had two stylists working on her hair.

Earlier this month the mother-of-one had been seen sporting a short dark bob seen at her book signing and as she sang at the FA Cup final.

But it didn’t take long for Stacey to miss a bigger bouffant and she attended an extended appointment at The Four Salon in London getting extensions put in, leaving her with longer and lighter locks.

Hair care takes time: Stacey was dressed in comfy clothing in a pair of leggings and a vest for the extended hair appointment in The Four salon, London yesterday

Hair everywhere! Stacey helped out the stylist by holding some of the extensions which transformed her short bob into luscious locks

At least Stacey had opted for comfy clothing for her marathon hair session and she was dressed in a pair of black leather-style leggings and a sheer grey T-shirt.

But Stacey’s patience and the stylist’s expertise paid off when the singer left with a full head of shiny hair which hung down almost to her waist.

Earlier this month Stacey had displayed a drastic and dark look with thick heavy eyebrows matching her deep brown hair at her autobiography My Story So Far, book signing.

Hair today more tomorrow: Earlier this month Stacey had displayed a drastic short bob at her book signing but has not regained her luscious locks

The book details her struggle to come to terms with motherhood after falling pregnant at 17 and she gives a frank account of her confusion when Zach was born.

‘I didn’t really want to hold him. I didn’t resent him, I resented myself and all I could think was that this was it, my life was over. I felt so hopeless. I didn’t want a baby.’

All hands to the scalp: The singer was seen by two stylists who worked on her hair to transform her at a London salon

Final rinse through: After the brunette stylist put the extensions in Stacey was lead to the sink by a blond hair dresser who finished off the style

The book also details her struggle to combat post natal depression and has proved popular with her fans.

On Tuesday Stacey took to Twitter to thank her fans for buying the book she tweeted: ‘Woooo can't believe my books no2 in the Sunday times best sellers that's amazing thank u everyone wouldnt be able to do anything without u!x’

Stacey Solomon: 'I hated being pregnant. When I had Zach, my life just seemed like one long, sad day'

By Bonnie Estridge

Loving bond: At first Stacey was shocked to find out she was pregnant but now she describes her son Zach as 'my whole world'

Stacey Solomon gazed down at her newborn son as she cradled him, and felt nothing but waves of sadness and regret. The birth had been difficult – labour had lasted an excruciating 37 hours – and when the 6lb 10oz scrap was handed to her, as her jubilant parents watched, she was ‘completely numb and utterly, utterly miserable’.

Stacey, 21, who shot to fame after singing her way to the final of ITV’s X Factor in 2009, and went on to win I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! last year, says: ‘I looked at Zach – I suppose that I must have had some love for him as I had given him a name – and thought, “What am I going to do?”

‘I didn’t really want to hold him. I didn’t resent him, I resented myself and all I could think was that this was it, my life was over. I felt so hopeless. I didn’t want a baby.’

These descriptions of despair are strikingly at odds with her upbeat public persona, yet Stacey is candid about the depression that descended on her when she discovered she was pregnant, aged 17. And, perhaps most poignantly, she admits that the son she now lovingly describes as ‘my whole world’ was so unwanted, she visited an abortion clinic.

The middle child of four boys and three girls from an extended but close Jewish family, Stacey was born and raised in Dagenham, Essex. Her father David, who had his own wedding photography business, and mother Fiona, a nurse, divorced when Stacey was nine.

She never had any aspirations to be a mother. ‘I was never a girly-girly maternal type of child who played with dolls. I liked being out in the street and go-carting,’ she says.

Stacey had been in a relationship with Dean, 19, a mechanic, for six months, when, in the summer of 2007, she went on holiday to Ibiza with friends.

‘While I was there I felt sick a lot of the time. I thought I had a tummy bug. I had no reason to think I was pregnant because Dean and I had never had unprotected sex and I was having regular periods.’

In the September of that year, Stacey enrolled at her local college to study musical theatre and, she says, felt ‘incredibly excited because my dream was to go to RADA [the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts]’.

But two weeks after enrolling, Stacey was at lunch with her father and stepmother Karen when her sense of smell became so heightened that she felt ill.

‘I had been feeling faint on and off for days. I thought I could smell onion on Karen’s breath but she

told me that she hadn’t eaten an onion for days – then she said that it sounded as though I might be pregnant. I told her that I wasn’t and couldn’t be because I had not missed any periods.

‘But Karen kept on at me to take a test. A few days later when I went to see my dad she had brought a pregnancy test kit. ‘When the blue cross appeared I was confused. Then I starting howling, “I can’t be, I can’t be…” ’

Stacey, who continued to have periods throughout her pregnancy, which happens to a minority of women due to low hormone levels, refused to believe that the test was correct, so Karen went with her to see her GP. After examination, he said the foetus was so developed that he could feel it.

Horrified, Stacey decided to look into a termination. ‘I saw a gynaecologist and was given a scan. The doctor turned the screen away from me but Mum was with me and I saw tears in her eyes.

‘The baby was well-formed and 18 weeks old. Having a termination would be complicated and when the doctor described exactly what would happen I knew I couldn’t go through with it.

‘My family were overjoyed, yet I felt nothing at all, only a sadness which would not go away.

‘Dean said nothing at first. He was probably so shocked that words failed him. Neither of us could get our heads round it.

‘Then I was told I would have to leave college – which I loved –as much of the course involved dancing which, with a pregnant woman involved, health and safety did not allow.

‘I spent days sitting in a fog of blankness. I cut myself off from people. I didn’t want to speak to anyone and I definitely didn’t want to tell people I was having a baby.’

To make matters worse, the birth, in March 2008, was not straightforward. Nine days overdue, she was given drugs to bring on labour contractions, and an epidural – an injection of anaesthetic into the spine to numb the pain. When the baby arrived Stacey had suffered tearing.

‘Because of the difficult labour I had to stay in hospital, and my family had to leave eventually. I was alone apart from the baby lying next to me. The more I cried, the more Zach screamed, and that really distressed me.

‘After three days I was allowed home. He wouldn’t feed – actually I had no idea how to feed him as no one had shown me at the hospital. Mum helped to get him attached but he would cry.

‘I couldn’t express my milk well so I had him constantly at my breast. I felt like a human cow and I hated it. His needs seemed never-ending and I became more exhausted.

No one else could get up in the night and feed him, it had to be me. You can’t take a break when you are breastfeeding, it’s you that has to be there.

‘Mum helped, but I felt so terribly sad all the time. Dean came to see us but we gradually drifted apart. Frankly, a boyfriend was the last thing on my mind. My life blurred into one long unhappy day. My thoughts and feelings didn’t seem to be part of me – they were somewhere else in the distance.’

Stacey says that things were made worse by three months of family, friends and health visitors telling her that she should keep going, that breastfeeding was the best thing for the baby.

Rising star: Stacey performs the national anthem prior to the FA Cup Final match between Manchester City and Stoke City earlier this month

Tell all: Stacey shares how she suffered from ante and post natal depression in her book Stacey: My Story So Far

‘Then one day I told Mum, “I really don’t want to do this any more. I need just one night of sleep.” She could see I had reached my limit and at this point my health visitor was in agreement, so now I was “allowed” [she holds her hands up to indicate inverted commas] to try bottle-feeding. Thinking back, I feel strongly there is far too much pressure put on mothers to breastfeed.’

Dr Lucinda Green, consultant prenatal psychiatrist at South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, agrees: ‘Breastfeeding has many benefits, but if it is a struggle then the mother’s wellbeing must be paramount, as this can fuel post-natal depression. Some women are depressed or guilty they cannot feed and are not giving the best to their baby, others don’t want to and have guilty thoughts about wanting to stop.’

Postnatal depression (PND) affects ten to 15 in 100 women and about a third of these have symptoms that start in pregnancy (antenatal depression). Also at risk are those who have suffered previous mental health problems, or endured stressful life events such as a bereavement, or job loss.

It is common for women to feel weepy, irritable and anxious for up to ten days after childbirth. This is usually called ‘baby blues’. However, PND may last for many months. The causes are not fully understood, and there is no evidence that hormonal changes are to blame.

The symptoms usually include low mood for long periods of time (a week or more), panic attacks or feeling trapped, difficulty concentrating and a lack of motivation.

Sufferers also describe feeling lonely, guilty, rejected or inadequate, overwhelmed and unable to cope. Many have difficulty sleeping and feeling constantly tired.

In severe cases, women think about harming their baby, self-harming or suicide, although it is rare to act on these thoughts. Similar to Stacey, many never seek

medical help.

‘Some don’t realise they are ill or feel ashamed to admit they are not enjoying being a mother,’ says Dr Green. ‘They may fear being judged or that their baby will be taken away. So it is important for partners, family and friends to recognise the signs of PND at an early stage and to seek professional advice. The most important step is recognising the problem. Most women get better within six months. One in every four will still be depressed when their child is one. There are antidepressants such as sertraline (also known as Zoloft) which can be used while breastfeeding for four to six months.’

To Stacey’s great relief, Zach took to the bottle well and, for her, this was a turning point. ‘After a couple of nights’ sleep I felt so much better,’ she says.

Then her mother suggested she take a holiday with friends and leave the baby with her. ‘I didn’t think I’d miss Zach when I was away but I did,’ says Stacey. ‘Most days I would ring Mum and ask her to put the phone by his ear and would tell him I loved him and missed him.’

Having struggled for so long to bond with her baby, when she came home from the holiday her feelings had changed. ‘When I saw him after that week away I felt overwhelmed with love,’ she says.

‘He looked at me and smiled. It melted my heart. I imagine it’s what mothers usually feel when their baby is first handed to them. I just had it a few months late.’

Dr Green says that decisions about how to treat PND depend on the individual, but a break can often be helpful.
‘Some women don’t want to be separated from their baby, while others find having time apart is a good thing. Rest is vital for recovery to begin.’

For Stacey, it was a gradual process. Later that year she went back to full-time education, studying musical theatre at Havering College, Essex. A part-time job in the bar of a country club helped pay for extra childcare.

‘I realised how lucky I was,’ she says. ‘I promised myself that I wouldn’t ever take Zach for granted again. I wanted to work and be a success for him. There were tough days, sometimes I felt low. But you just keep going.’

Success has reaped financial rewards and last year Stacey bought her first home, in Essex. Her boyfriend, Aaron Barham, 22, a decorator, lives nearby. ‘He loves Zach and Zach loves him,’ says Stacey.

‘I went through a difficult time but I bottled it up. Looking back, I think I would have benefited from seeing a counsellor, and anyone who is feeling low should talk to someone. I’m lucky I had my family to support me, and given time, I got better.

‘Before X Factor I had to speak to the show’s psychologist to check I was stable enough to cope. It was the first time I’d told anyone what I’d been though. It felt more like I was telling a story about someone else. That’s when I knew that depression was truly behind me.’

Stacey Solomon goes for inked-in eyebrows and helmet hair for her first ever book signing

By Daily Mail Reporter

New look: Last year's I'm A Celebrity winner Stacey Solomon showed off her new eyebrows and straight bob as she launched her autobiography in Chelmsford today (l) - compared to her look on 2009's X Factor (r)

She won the nation's hearts on 2009's X Factor and stormed to victory on last year's I'm A Celebrity - but Stacey Solomon won't be winning many extra fans with her new makeover.

The 21-year-old singer recently had her hair dyed dark brown - and today revealed heavily coloured-in eyebrows too at her first ever book signing.

She was also sporting an unflattering straight elongated bob hair style in a marked style change from her wavy locks at the weekend, when she sang at the FA Cup final.

The mother-of-one was launching her autobiography My Story So Far at WH Smiths in Chelmsford.

There were astonishing scenes when four policemen and 10 security guards turned up to oversee an estimated 50 fans.

She wrote on her Twitter this afternoon: 'Can't believe how many people turned up today in Chelmsford for my first book signing !! Thank you so much love u all! Mwaa xxx'

The star, who lives in nearby Dagenham, was clearly hoping for more people to turn up.

Over the top: Four police officers and 10 security guards were at the event to marshall just 50 fans after the star staged the signing in school hours - meaning many young fans couldn't attend

She wrote on her Twitter yesterday: 'So excited for my first ever book signing tomorrow in Chelmsford wahooooo hope to see all of my locals there, yay.'

But many young fans were left disappointed that she was doing the book signing during school hours.

Posting on her official website, one fan opined: 'Stacey, I can't believe you are doing it at this time and date, I'm at school. Really, really wanted to meet you.'

The star, who is also the new face of Iceland and features in ads with her three-year-old son Zachary, released her book last Thursday.

Not mobbed: The police officers were left laughing and chatting among themselves as far fewer than expected fans turned up to the Chelmsford signing

She said of the tome: 'At first, I didn't want to write an autobiography because I'm only 21 but it was nice to look back on things and remember exactly how I felt.'

Stacey, who co-hosts ITV1's Saturday night show Sing If You Can with comedian Keith Lemon, is currently also rumoured to be in talks to also become the new host of The Xtra Factor.

If she is successful, she will take over from the axed Konnie Huq.

She is also currently working on her debut album and recently revealed she would love to present Big Brother when it re-launches on Channel 5 later this year.

On stage: The Sing If You Can presenter had wavy hair at the weekend when she sang the national anthem at the FA Cup final at Wembley
