Barbarella is back! Jane Fonda, 73, shows off her time-defying figure as she steps out in a daring thigh-high boots

Age-defying: Jane Fonda looked nowhere near her 73 years as she went out to lunch today wearing leggings and thigh-high boots that left little to the imagination

She may be 73, but while her contemporaries are shuffling around in fluffy slippers, Jane Fonda was sporting a pair of thigh-high boots today reminiscent of the pair she wore in the sci-fi fantasy flick Barbarella more than 40 years ago.

Looking as good as a woman a third of her age, she was spotted out in New York City City wearing an unforgiving pair of leggings and towering suede tan boots.

Despite her incredible figure, the star has revealed she has long battled with her own self image, partly due to her relationship with her father, actor Henry Fonda.

'I was raised in the ’50s,' she explains. 'I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.'

Fonda is currently in the Big Apple promoting her new book, Prime Time: Love, Health, Sex, Fitness, Friendship, Spirit — Making the Most of all of Your Life.

She appeared on the Today Show with Matt Lauer this morning and spoke about her decision to have plastic surgery.

The Barbarella star told Lauer she didn’t feel pressure to maintain a certain look.

'I just decided I wanted to buy myself some time and look more like how I feel,' said Fonda, who had work on her chin, neck and under the eyes.

'Afterwards I thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s me,’' she continued, 'I feel so great and so rested and I look so different and I just decided — and I’m not proud of it — I decided I wanted to look more like how I feel.'

Spot the difference: Fonda shot to fame as a sexy astronaurt in the 1968 film Barbarella and can still pull off a pair of thigh high boots 40 years later

The star, who is a notable political activist, has earned two Academy Awards during her long career which has seen her star in film hits including Coming Home and Klute.

It was the 1968 science fiction spoof Barbarella however, directed by her French film director husband Roger Vadim, that established her status as a sex symbol.

Set in an unspecified future time, the title sequence featuring Barbarella’s infamous weightless striptease made the film a cult classic and has been reproduced numerous times - most recently by Kylie Minogue in her video for Put Yourself in My Place.

Fonda has even said she would pounce on the chance to reprise the role.
'I have a dream – to do a sequel to 'Barbarella,' Fonda said. 'Not a remake, a sequel!'

She's still got it: Fonda gets an affectionate goodbye from a friend after lunch

Fonda, an '80s fitness guru, also said that what she learned about the role exercise plays in aging while researching her new project 'just blew me away.'

'It’s important to exercise when you’re younger,' she said. 'But it’s like the number one ingredient for successful aging. It makes a difference for all aspects of your life and your body.

'I’m happier now than I was before,” Fonda said. “That’s not exactly what I expected at 73.'

The actress has two new films coming out next year, Peace, Love & Misunderstand, also featuring Elizabeth Olsen and Chace Crawford, and the French comedy Et si on vivait tous ensemble (And If We All Lived Together) her first French film since Jean-Luc Godard's Tout va bien in 1972.

'I like showing off my waist and butt': Jane Fonda, 73, displays her age-defying figure in a sheer dress

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Age defying: Jane Fonda discusses her body image, men and getting older in a new interview with this month's Harper's Bazaar magazine

She may be 73, but Jane Fonda is looking - and feeling - as good as a woman a third of her age.

A photograph of the actress and fitness guru in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine shows her looking stunning in a slinky black dress complete with sheer panels with polka dot detail.

The actress tells the publication that she has learned to love herself after a long battle with bulimia and issues with her self image.

She eventually stopped and instead turned to exercise. 'I don't do lunges, though, because I have a fake knee and a fake hip,' says Jane, who is promoting her new new self help book Prime Time.

Despite her incredible figure, which she recently showed off to wide admiration at the Cannes Film Festival, the star reveals she has long battled with her own self image, partly due to her relationship with her father, actor Henry Fonda.

Now the actress is not letting her age get in the way of vanity.

'I’m vain,' she says. 'My arms are thin, but I’m vain about loose flesh. And so I’m careful that what I wear will show off my best parts, which are my waist and my butt.'

But she is conscious of not trying to dress too young for her age.

'I have people in my life who will say, "Honey, you’re trying too hard," she says. 'I like being saucy, but I’m 73 and a half. I’m still trying to find my way between matronly and coltishness.'

Claim to fame: Jane's role as Barbarella in the 1967 film thrust her firmly into the public eye
