Harry has a ball in Brazil: Rugby, volleyball and a fond salute to his big brother as Prince takes charm offensive to the beach

By George Arbuthnott

Hit: Wearing a shirt and baseball cap in the Brazilian colours and his name, Prince Harry gives it his all in a game against some of Brazil's top beach volleyball players

It's possibly not the first time that a game of beach volleyball has raised Prince Harry’s pulse rate.

But yesterday, the sport got the 27-yearold hot and sweaty when he took part in a spirited game in the 88F (31C) heat of Rio de Janeiro.

After diving and lunging across the sands of Copacabana beach in his yellow and green Brazilian shirt, Harry declared this was ‘my kind of game’ – even though he admitted it left him exhausted.

The 27-year-old royal was clearly having a ball during the match amid stunning scenery

Double world champion Adriana Behar, who had given him some coaching tips, asked: ‘Will you be watching the beach volleyball at the London Olympics because it’s so near your home?’

Harry replied: ‘I’ve already bought the tickets.’

Adriana, 43, said: ‘I’m really happy. I can’t wait to meet him again in London. He was really good and he’s clearly played before.’

The match was part of a day of sport for the Prince, which also included a mile-long fun run in aid of Sport Relief, which he competed in 8 min 32 sec.

Drama: Prince Harry sinks to his knees to save a shot as the crowd looks on and thanks his opponents, who are some of Brazil's top beach volleyball players

The game took place in the shadow of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugar Loaf mountain

In one of many moments of levity, he was handed a cardboard mask of his brother.
Putting it on, he ran for a while disguised as Prince William alongside blind athlete Alice de Oliveura Correio, 17.

Harry also taught local children to play rugby on the beach – although his technique of slowing down his young opponents by tugging at their shirts might be frowned upon by the sport’s governing bodies.

Luckily the vice-president of the Rugby Football Union is unlikely to complain – since it’s one HRH Prince Harry.

The young Royal was keen to promote the sport in Brazil because it will be included for the first time in the Olympics during the 2016 Rio games.

After giving his lessons, Harry joked: ‘One plea to all Brazilians, though. Please, please, if we show you how to play rugby, don’t do what you’ve done with football, and leave us wishing we hadn’t!’

Last night he was due to finish his sporting day with a game of cricket in the notorious Complexo de Alemao – a group of 13 favela slums in the north of Rio, which until a police and army push in November 2010 was controlled by heavily armed drugs gangs comprising thousands of men.

There are now at least 1,800 soldiers permanently patrolling the favelas and extra military were drafted in to provide security around the Prince.

Today, Harry will end his official visit to Brazil with a polo match in the city of Campinas, raising money for his Sentebale African children’s charity.

Sport was a big part of Harry’s trip since it is an important strand in a £25 million marketing campaign designed to use the London Olympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to woo more tourists to Britain.

On Friday night, the Prince launched the campaign on Sugarloaf Mountain by lifting the FA Cup. David Beckham spoke by video link, telling Prince Harry to ‘get the party started as only he can’.

Harry responded: ‘That was David Beckham. Apparently he used to play football. Thank you, David.’

The Prince has also been promoting British business in Brazil – a country he said he had a special affection for.

‘Over the years, I’ve seen and heard so much about this extraordinary place,’ he said in speech. ‘In fact, ever since my father told me about a certain dance he once had with a beautiful girl called Pina. It just seems to have stuck in his mind, for some reason . . .’

Prince Harry chatted to model and actress Lily Cole last night after making a speech praising British-Brazilian relations at the launch of the Great Campaign on the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio De Janeiro

It was a light-hearted reference to the famous image of Prince Charles dancing enthusiastically with a scantily clad samba dancer named Pina de Beija-Flora during his visit to Rio in 1978.

‘Everything about Rio makes you want to dance,’ Harry said. ‘I’m just so thankful that my brother isn’t here because he might actually do it – and that would not be cool.

‘I feel that it’s going to be a great era for our two countries, for the friendship between us – something like a marriage. Now, there’s an idea . . .’

Don't step on my blue suede shoes: Party Prince Harry gets down to Bob Marley in Jamaica wearing brightly-coloured desert boots

By Rebecca English

The reluctant rhumba: The prince looks unsure at first when he is invited to dance... but he soon warms up

Prince Harry danced his socks off in blue suede shoes yesterday.

The prince was visiting the Rise Life project in downtown Kingston when he was pulled to his feet by attractive Chantol Dormer.

The 27-year-old royal proved that, unlike most men, he had remarkably good rhythm as he gyrated to a rendition of reggae legend Bob Marley's One Love.

Harry was wearing an eye-wincingly bright pair of £115 Russell and Bromley desert boots.

Showing him the moves: After a tentative start, the young royal soon gets to grips with the routine

Rhythm and blue shoes: Harry the party prince takes to the floor with Chantol Dormer as the pair dance to Bob Marley

As the Mail revealed on Tuesday there has already been a rush to snap up the identical light brown pair he has been wearing all week.

Rise Life is an inspirational project for young people in one of the more deprived districts of Kingston, providing learning facilities and a safe haven for young people aged from about 10 years old upwards.

Harry met children and staff participating in a counselling session and viewed some of the centre’s facilities including an IT workshop, before attending a Rise Life party in the courtyard with scores of young people and staff.

Last night Harry attended a black tie state dinner with Prime Minister Mrs Simpson.
In a well-received speech the prince had his audience eating out of his hand with a few jokes in the local patois.

He said: 'I count it a great privilege to be standing here tonight, representing The Queen in Jamaica on her Diamond Jubilee. Her Majesty has asked me to extend her great good wishes to you all, and is sorry that she can't be here - so you're stuck with me... but don't worry, cos every liddle ting gonna be aright! '

Prince Charming: The locals seemed enamoured by the young royal as stopped off in Kingston as part of his the Diamond Jubilee tour

Harry added: 'It is many years since The Queen first came to Jamaica – 59, in fact. Ever since then, this island and its people have retained a very special place in her heart.

'Your vibrancy and vigour, your wonderful welcome to visitors and your island's natural beauties - all combine to make Jamaica unique. ‬‪The Queen recognised this.

'As a representative of the younger generation, I see fully what my Grandmother means.

'This is truly an exciting place to be. Jamaicans are exciting people to be around - especially when they run the 100 metres in 9.58.

Ladies' man: The female dancers and musicians from the Rise Life project seemed particularly taken with the prince

'If I may, just for a moment, I would like to take this opportunity to pay a personal tribute to my Grandmother. For me, as for millions of people around the world, her lifetime’s service to others is truly an inspiration.

'But she combines all her virtues as a leader and as a Head of State, with those of being a wonderful, caring grandmother - to whom we, her grandchildren, are utterly devoted.‬‪

'It just leaves me, therefore, to say on behalf of The Queen how grateful Her Majesty is for the heartfelt way in which Jamaicans have embraced her Diamond Jubilee and are helping her to celebrate it.

‬‪ 'As for me, I haven't been here for long, but - wow - if I had, I'm not sure my Grandmother would get me back.'

The day Flash Harry beat Usain Bolt in 100m sprint: Royal takes gold in race in Jamaica (with a little help by jumping the gun)

By Rebecca English

When you are facing the fastest man who has ever lived in a 20 yard dash then there is only one thing for it. Cheat.

Not the most sporting option, admittedly. But the grin on Prince Harry’s face as he crossed the finishing line ahead of world record holder Usain Bolt in Jamaica yesterday said it all.

The two men met at an athletics track in the capital Kingston on the first of a four day visit to the Caribbean Island on behalf of the Queen.

Taking gold: Prince Harry leaves Usain Bolt in his wake as he races him in Jamaica

Harry had already privately admitted to being slightly nervous at the showdown with Bolt, who is royalty in his home country. And with good reason.

The poster boy of athletics holds five world records and three Olympic golds.

His 9.58 second time in the 100m is unlikely to be beaten for some time – if ever.

He also holds the world record over 200m of 19.19.

Called to the starting blocks to limber up, Harry – who was sportingly wearing a tracksuit, running top and trainers in the Jamaican national colours of black, gold and green – took a cheeky sidelong look at his rival and then sprinted off before the officials could even utter the words ‘ready, steady go’.

All systems go: Both Harry and Usain burst out of the traps

Odds against: The beaming royal takes an early lead after Bolt fails to live up to his name

Playing for the crowd: Bolt stops and allows Prince Harry to race ahead

To Bolt’s astonishment, he jumped the gun and hared down the track roaring with laughter, flinging his arms out in triumph as he crossed the finish line - and leaving one of the finest athletes the world has ever seen jogging helplessly after him with his hands in the air in mock indignation.

Aides insisted that the race hadn’t been stunted. ‘It was just a spur of the moment thing,’ said one. ‘Prince Harry just went with it. That’s what he is like.’

Fortunately the champion’s ego wasn’t remotely dented and the pair hugged and slapped each other’s backs as they walked, laughing, back to the start.

To make up for his trick, Harry good naturedly agreed to mimic the track star’s famous ‘lightning Bolt’ pose for the cameras.

‘Come on man, let’s do it,’ the prince laughed.

Afterwards Bolt told the Mail: ‘Yeah, man, he cheated. He knew he couldn’t beat me but wanted to go back to London saying he did. I’ve told him I want a rematch at London 2012 but Harry said ‘I’m busy’.

This is how it's done: Bolt shows Harry how to pull off his trademark celebration

He's got the moves: Harry joins Bolt - with the same aplomb as his night club moves

Plan: Harry and Usain discuss race tactics beforehand, left, and afterwards the prince gloats over his victory

‘It was good, though. He cheated, but it is good, he was cool. He is very down to earth and charming. It was an honour and a pleasure to meet him. He is a really laid back guy, a wonderful person. He is professional but no like a lot of the dignitaries you meet.

‘I’m the still the fastest man in the world, so he still has a long way to go.

‘I told him that he better make time for a rematch. Because it’s on.’

Harry is half way through his first week-long visit on behalf of the Queen, to mark her Diamond Jubilee, and has already taken in Belize and the Bahamas.

He was visiting the Usain Bolt Track at the University of the West Indies to pass on the monarch’s best wishes to the Jamaican national team ahead of the London Olympics.

In a question and answer session before the race, Harry and Bolt appeared to get on famously, teasing each other mercilessly.

Bolt told the prince that he had been told to let him win, while Harry, 27, on learning that the athlete was two years younger than him, replied: ‘Yeah, well I was in my prime at 25.’

The prince also wished the Jamaican team luck and promised to meet them in the Athlete’s Village over the summer, saying: ‘You should be massively proud of your country and of him.

‘I know that when I was at school sport was the best thing, being stuck in a classroom wasn’t. I probably shouldn’t have said that!

'If you have got talent use it and don’t go running off to America because you have a clear talent your country needs.’

Pointing to Bolt and rolling his eyes he added: ‘And they tell me that this man hasn’t even reached his full potential yet.’

It was clear that Harry is something of a fan of the champion as, after the race, he pulled out a giant poster of a horse for him to sign.

Aides revealed that the prince has bought a 100th share in a racehorse with some friends that he has, amusingly, called Usain Colt.

The three-year-old bay male – whose sire is Royal Applause - won its maiden race at Newbury last October and is being trained by Richard Hannon, one of the Queen’s trainers.

The syndicate which owns the horse includes Harry’s pals Guy Pelly, Jake Warren (son of the Queen’s racing manager) and folk star Marcus Mumford.

Bolt welcomed Prince Harry to Jamaica by handing him a portrait of himself during the photocall in Kingston. The Prince and the world record holder then posed with a specially made t-shirt which declared that, 'Harry can Bolt'

Bolt, who gave Harry a pair of signed trainers and a Jamaican running top with the name ‘Harry Bolt’ on the back, explained that prince had asked him to sign the poster so he could show his fellow owners.

‘It was meant to be a secret but he has bought a share in the horse which he has named after me. It’s a real honour. He is going to go great, I think. He has already had a couple of wins. ‘

The sprinter later sounded a little worried that he may have given away some secrets Harry could pass on to Britain's Olympic team. ‘I think I taught him a few things about the start, he may just tell the people back home,’ he said.

‘I just can’t wait to get to London, though.’

'I call him Captain and he calls me Commando,' Are 'close friends' Harry and Pippa on the verge of becoming an item?

By Lauren Paxman

Cheeky sense of humour: Pippa and Harry joked around on the balcony on Buckingham Palace at the Royal Wedding

They are both recently single, and became the UK’s second most talked about couple after joking around on Buckingham Palace’s balcony at the Royal Wedding...

It’s too good to be true, but could Pippa Middleton and Prince Harry be on the verge of becoming an item?

The couple have reportedly met up a handful of times since their siblings got married in April and are said to already have nicknames for each other.

Pippa apparently calls the Prince ‘Captain’ - which is his military rank - while he calls her ‘Commando’, in reference to rumours that she was not wearing any underwear on her sister’s wedding day.

Harry is also said to have ended his best man’s speech with the line: ‘Pippa, call me.’

A royal insider told Grazia that the couple have been helping each other through their break-ups, saying: ‘They speak on the phone all the time and have met up at least five times since the wedding, once for tea at his Clarence House apartments... She thinks he’s got a really cheeky sense of humour.’

They have also gone more public with their budding friendship. The pair turned heads when they turned up at The Troubadour in Chelsea for a hushed tete-a-tete. They stayed in the royal haunt for two hours.

Close friends: Despite their busy schedules, Pippa and Harry have met up and handful of times since their siblings got married

Another source said: ‘He only recently came out of a relationship, of course. He’s been trying to cheer Pippa up.’

We wouldn’t expect anything less from the perfect gentleman.

But if Harry really is interested, he’ll have to join the queue. Now that her long term boyfriend, Alex Loudon, is reportedly off the scene, many of Pippa’s exes have been thrown back into the limelight.

George Percy is currently seen as the most likely replacement. He accompanied Pippa and her friends to Madrid shortly after the wedding, and has offered her a job in his environmental firm.

Another contender for Commando? Pippa Middleton went to watch the tennis at Queen's Club with her ex, and boss, George Percy

Last week the couple were spotted house hunting together at exclusive London property giant, Grosvenor Estates - sparking speculation that they are going to move in together.

Other men apparently after a piece of Pippa include her old friend singer James Blunt, and Prince William’s close friend, Barts nightclub owner Charlie Gilkes - as well as most of the male cast of Made in Chelsea.

Pippa has got her pick of the crop, so will she go for a prince or a pop star?

Harry the hunk: Young Prince shows off newly toned torso as he takes William on at polo

By Daily Mail Reporter

Looking lean: Prince Harry turns heads at Ascot for a charity polo match on Sunday

Prince Harry showed off his rippling torso as he braved torrential rain yesterday to take on the Duke of Cambridge in a charity polo tournament.

While William has been the centre of attention following his wedding in April, the newly single Harry has clearly been busy working out - turning heads at the Sentebale Polo Cup when he removed his short-sleeved top to reveal a tighter one underneath.

Harry, 26, has always been popular with the ladies but his rumoured split with on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davies has once again placed him top of the eligible Singles list.

Brotherly love: Harry sensibly put his top back on ahead of the charity game

The royal brothers were deluged by the downpours and buffeted by strong winds as they led their opposing teams in the Sentebale Polo Cup.

The event was due to be held in the sultry setting of Dubai but unrest across the Middle East prompted Harry earlier this year to postpone the annual event - staged to raise funds for his charity Sentebale.

It was relocated to the beautiful setting of Coworth Park near Ascot in Berkshire.

The event raises funds and awareness for the charity that Harry co-founded in 2006 to help disadvantaged youngsters in the Southern African country of Lesotho.

Skillful: Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, remained focused throughout the game. The three teams played in a round-robin tournament

The prince joined forces with Prince Seeiso from Lesotho to establish Sentebale which has launched a new five-year plan to extend its efforts helping Aids orphans and other vulnerable African youngsters.

Talking about the polo tournament held for the second year Seeiso said: 'The Cup is being staged again to raise the profile of the charity and to increase our network of friends.

'Because what is increasingly important about Sentebale's work is to maintain the levels of funds and finance so whatever programmes we have in place can be properly funded.

'Not just for the next year but to do a proper programme of events for the next two, three years.'

When the event was postponed earlier this year, a St James's Palace spokesman said the third-in-line to the throne felt it was insensitive to stage the Cup in Dubai when there were 'matters of greater priority to focus on in the region'.

During the polo tournament Harry played for Sentebale against William, 28, who turned out for a Tusk Trust team, a conservation charity of which he is royal patron.

A third group of players sponsored by Bin Drai Enterprises - a Dubai-based family office - were the final opponents.

The three teams played in a round-robin tournament with Harry's group of players taking on Tusk Trust in the final match of the day.

When the two brothers met on the polo field there was friendly rivalry with Harry joking with his older sibling when the action on the pitch brought them together.

The invited guests barely left a marquee to watch the sporting spectacle as there was little let up in the wintry conditions.
Tusk Trust won the tournament and William - whose bald patch was exposed by the torrential rain - accepted the trophy on behalf of his team as his brother looked on.

After the polo Harry hosted a fundraising dinner where a charity auction was held to raise funds for his organisation while William left to join his wife Kate at a private royal family function.

The guests dined on a starter of potted salmon, a main course of cottage pie and a summer pudding for dessert washed down with wine.

Harry summed up the aims of his charity in a speech to guests telling them how his organisation would help a young Lesotho 'herd boy' who, determined to better himself, made great sacrifices in an attempt to become a doctor.

The Prince took William to Lesotho last year to see the work of his organisation and the royals travelled to a remote area of the mountainous country to meet herd boys who work in harsh conditions looking after cattle in attempt to provide money for their families.

Harry told the guests: 'Talk of orphans and vulnerable children seems a million miles away from where we are tonight, in the glorious setting of Coworth Park.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge laughs with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho as the game comes to an end

'But, even now, just talking about this, I have the clearest picture in my mind of a young herd boy called Tholo.

'William and I met him one night last summer when we were in Lesotho together. He was seven-years-old. He had walked on his own through the cold and darkness for five miles.'

Harry told the guests that the boy made the long trek simply to learn to read and write because he wanted to become a doctor and help his people.

So what were Prince Harry and Charlize Theron chuckling about?

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Polo pals: Harry and Charlize Theron yesterday

His usual blonde companion is on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

Yesterday Prince Harry appeared to have found a stand-in at the polo field, in the form of Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron.

The 26-year-old prince seemed at his ease with the South African Miss Theron, 35.

On or off? Prince Harry's former companion Chelsy Davy

Admiring glances: Observers noticed that the pair seemed to be getting along well

The pair laughed and joked together at the Audi Challenge Polo Cup at Coworth Park in Ascot, Berkshire.

Perhaps they were talking about charity work - something they have in common.

Harry helped establish Sentebale, in Lesotho, in southern Africa to help orphans and the forgotten victims of poverty and AIDS.

Miss Theron has established her own outreach project to help prevent the spread of HIV among teenagers.

An onlooker said: ‘They appeared to be getting on very well.’

Was a 3am balcony leap the reason Prince Harry looked a tad under par at the Abbey?

By CHARLOTTE GRIFFITHS

Best foot forward: Prince Harry arrives at Westminster Abbey... but is said to have hurt his ankle eight hours earlier after leaping from the Goring Hotel veranda

As he stood at his brother’s side in Westminster Abbey waiting for the bride to arrive, Prince Harry drew more than a few questioning glances.

Despite his smart military uniform, the young Royal appeared a little jaded, with his hair askew and a definite look of someone who had not had enough sleep.

Now a possible answer to the question of why Harry seemed a touch under par on Royal Wedding day has emerged.

Unusual exit: How Harry is said to have left the Goring Hotel hours before his appearance as best man at his brother's wedding

Sources have revealed that the best man was out socialising until 3am – eight hours before the wedding.

And he is said to have left the party venue with an athletic leap from a balcony which saw him land awkwardly on one ankle.

The scene of the raucous goings-on was The Goring, the hotel which the Middleton family had taken over in the days before the wedding on Friday, April 29.

On the Thursday evening, a group of the young Royal circle had congregated in a bar there and were enjoying themselves heartily.

The festivities came to an end only at 3am when a young copper-haired reveller casually jumped off a veranda balcony, landing with a clumsy thump on a lawn 6ft below – to roars of laughter from his friends.

Proud moment: Prince Harry accompanies his big brother down the aisle for the wedding

According to sources, that reveller was the athletic Harry, whose looming day of duty had not stopped him sharing a few drinks with friends.

An onlooker said: ‘Harry was with Pippa Middleton and Chelsy Davy among other friends for some pre-wedding drinks.

'He was the life and soul of the party until the early hours.

‘People were surprised to see him there so late before one of the biggest wedding days of the decade, and even more surprised when he jumped off the balcony – and landed with a thump.

'He had struggled to climb up the railings to get into position, so when he jumped over the edge he did so rather unsteadily and landed awkwardly next to a flower bed.

‘He flinched for just a moment before he stood up, rubbing his ankle. Then he looked up, smiled and waved to a roar of cheers before disappearing on to the lawn where there was a secret exit.

‘People were laughing and joking that his fall could have seen him walking through Westminster Abbey the following morning with a broken leg. At one point it was thought he’d twisted his ankle.

A spokesman said: ‘Prince Harry had a private dinner with his brother, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. What he did after that is a private matter.’
