'It's a golden night for us': Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt scoop award for best dressed couple

By Iona Kirby

Stealing the show: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were the best-dressed couple on the Golden Globes red carpet

They may have lost out on Golden Globe awards, but Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie scooped the gong for the best dressed couple on the red carpet.

Angelina wowed in a floor-length cream satin gown with a side slit that cut up to her thigh.

The asymmetric dress by Atelier Versace had a red fold across the chest, which Angelina, 36, matched with a miniature clutch bag and some bright pillarbox lipstick.

A perfect fit: Angelina's Atelier Versace dress boasted an interesting shape and colour combination

The interesting cut of the dress showed off Angelina's tiny frame thanks to its structured top, ruching at the waist and flowing skirt.

She also tied her brunette locks in an elegant bun and slipped some cream peep toe high heels onto her feet to complete the stunning look.

Brad, 48, wore a classic tuxedo by Tom Ford, with satin lapels and a bow tie to the star-studded event.

Already winners: The stylish couple are rumoured to be presenting an award, and are also both nominated for Globes

Elegant: Angelina opted for a classic bun to complete her look

'It's a golden night for us,' he told E! host Ryan Seacrest, referring to the pair's double nomination.

Brad was up for Best Actor in a Drama and Best Motion Picture Drama for Moneyball, which he produced and starred in.

However, he lost out to his close friend George Clooney, who was joined at the event by his girlfriend Stacy Keibler.

Golden couple: The pair both presented awards during the ceremony

George had introduced Brad's film Moneyball at the ceremony, while Brad returned the favour and introduce The Descendants.

The actor is still walking with the aid of a cane following a knee injury, after he apparently slipped and fell while taking care of daughter Vivienne.

Meanwhile Angelina's directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

It takes two: George Clooney and Stacy Keibler are another power couple gracing the red carpet for the Golden Globes

Date night: Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban posed up for photographers at the awards, as did Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault

When asked about the film, she said: 'I was nervous about people in Bosnia seeing it who survived war and rape.'

'It's a very difficult subject matter, it's done in a foreign language, and with people nobody knows,'she explained.

'These are difficult times and people don't often want to watch difficult movies in difficult times, but it's important to revisit this history no matter, so we pushed forward and made it.'

Pretty in pink: Natalie Portman attended with her husband Benjamin Millepied, with whom she has a son Aleph

Coordinating: Len Wiseman and Kate Beckinsale, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham made sure they didn't clash while posing for photographers

Angelina's film did not win, however, with that honour going to Iranian film A Separation.

She did make an appearance on stage though, presenting the Best Director for Motion Picture honour to Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

Looking good! Josh Brolin and Diane Lane looked sleek and smart as they smiled for photographers

Happy couples: Kelsey Grammer and Kayte Walsh, who revealed they are expecting twins, and Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr

Happily married: Seth Rogen lets his wife Lauren Miller shine in a bright yellow dress while he looks smart in his tuxedo

These doggone award ceremonies! Uggie gets used to his new-found fame as The Artist sweeps the board at Golden Globes

By Sarah Bull

These doggone award ceremonies! Uggie the dog is learning to cope with his fame, as he showed when he posed up at the Golden Globes for his movie The Artist

He's the Jack Russell terrier who has won himself millions of fans worldwide thanks to his scene-stealing performance in the critically-acclaimed movie The Artist.

So when it came to organising the guest list for the Golden Globe Awards, there was little doubt that Uggie should be at the top of that list.

And, sure enough, the cute canine stole the show as he posed on the red carpet with his Artist co-stars after the film took home the Best Motion Picture award, as well as Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for Jean Dujardin.

As the group smiled for the waiting photographers, they were left stunned and burst into laughter as Uggie, who wore a bow tie for the occasion, deliberately placed his paw on the Golden Globe trophy.

While the Globes have yet to introduce a Best Animal Performance category, Uggie is already an award-winner as he took home the Palm Dog at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for best canine performance in a film, with the judges saying afterwards 'he was light, lovable, plain fun and funny.'

Despite Uggie proving to be centre stage at the awards, held at the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom, it had apparently been difficult to get the pooch and his trainer on the guest list, as he isn't technically a nominee at the awards.

What a clever canine! The cast of the critically-acclaimed silent movie howled with delight as Uggie placed his paw on the Golden Globe trophy

Posing up: The nine-year-old Jack Russell terrier has become a star thanks to his role in the film

Uggie and trainer Omar von Muller also had to have pictures taken for their passes ahead of the awards, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Uggie's appearance at the ceremony came as silent movie The Artist almost swept the board at the awards - taking home three of the prestigious prizes.

And the nine-year-old dog didn't end his night early following the ceremony, choosing instead to head to the Weinstein afterparty.

The night is still young! Following the ceremony, Uggie attended the Weinstein afterparty with James Cromwell

Sweeping the board: Jean Dujardin won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for The Artist, while composer Ludovic Bource took home Best Original Score

The Artist is continuing to wow critics and fans with its charming tale of silent movie actor George Valentin (Dujardin) and how he coped with the dawn of the new era of 'talkies'.

It also stars French actress Berenice Bejo, who is married to the film's director Michel Hazanavicius, as love interest Peppy Miller, as well as John Goodman and James Cromwell.

'If I'm like a virgin Ricky, come over here and do something about it': Madonna bites back at Gervais... after leaving Elton John red-faced

By Andrea Magrath

He had introduced her by sarcastically saying she was still 'like a virgin' while pretending to muffle a series of snort.

But while Ricky Gervais enjoyed poking fun at Madonna, it was she who got the last laugh.

As she stepped onto the stage she addressed the Golden Globes presenter and asked him: 'If I'm just like a virgin Ricky why don't you come over here and do something about it,' before adding: 'I haven't kissed a girl in quite a few years, at least not on TV'.

Biting back: Madonna replied to Ricky Gervais' joke by calling him a girl which raised a few laughs

Ricky feigned being frightened and was seen sprinting across the stage behind her, which raised plenty of laughs among the crowd.

She shrugged off the British comedian's remarks to announce the winner of the best foreign language film.

But no wonder Madonna was feeling invincible, she had just proved Elton John wrong by scooping the gong for Best Original Song.

Nice introduction: Ricky had joked that not only was Madonna the Queen of pop but also sarcastically joked that she was 'like a virgin'

Quick dash: As Madonna shrugged off the joke Ricky was seen running behind her

Earlier in the red carpet Elton John had predicted that the 53-year-old had 'no f***ing chance of wining' an award.

It is her first trip down the Golden Globes red carpet in 14 years, and as a double nominee Madonna pulled out all the stops.

The W.E. director wore a daring gown by Reem Acra which featured a plunging neckline as she made the press rounds with her leading lady Andrea Riseborough by her side.

Green with envy: Madonna walked the red carpet in a plunging Reem Acra gown at the Golden Globes on Sunday, but was soon squabbling with her old nemesis Elton John

Madonna's win was especially sweet because she was actually up against the Rocket Man in the Best Original Song category.

During his red carpet interview Elton was discussing her fellow nominees chances, but when he came to his arch-rival he remarked: 'Madonna doesn't have a f***ing chance of winning tonight.'

When the reporter asked if 'those were fighting words?' he replied: 'No, those are accurate words.'

Catty: Elton John (pictured with David Furnish) and Madonna are nominated in the same category for Best Original Song

When the same reporter informed Madonna minutes later that Elton had just been by, she reportedly asked: 'Was he wearing a dress?' And when told of his comment, she snapped back: 'May the best man win.'

Elton, who was nominated for Gnomeo & Juliet, had to eat his words as it was announced shortly into the ceremony that Madonna was the winner.

Others in the category were songs from Machine Gun Preacher, The Help and Albert Nobbs.

Viewers appeared to be most interested in Madonna's bizarre accent during the televised red carpet.

Claws out: The singer said that Madonna had 'no f***ing chance of winning'

Victorious: Madonna retorted 'may the best man win' ... but walked away with the prize on the night

With commenters on social network sites remarking that her American accent was prominent in some interviews and her 'British' one in others.

On the red carpet, Madonna said of making W.E. that she 'had no idea that it was going to be so challenging, complicated, exhausting and fulfilling.'

Madonna's teamed her elaborate green and silver chainmail-style gown with her recent trademark fingerless gloves. She added a chunky crucifix necklace and silver bangles.
